Re: Mahindra XEV 9e Review

Hope Mahindra can fix all the issues, errors etc in these BE cars. We need strong, Indian companies that can engineer world class products locally as no nation can now depend on foreign countries or companies alone.

I have a close friend who has recently booked the top end Mahindra XEV 9e, preferring it over BYD or MG as he wants to promote Indian products. I've told him he can expect glitches which hopefully are getting fixed before he gets his vehicle. I'm also genuinely curious about the XEV and he's promised to get the car over on a Sunday so that I can test it.

He's also booked a Toyota Hycross for his father who was fed up with a 7 year old, unreliable Rangerover that had recently broken down twice leaving him stranded.

Never used the Gaana App so can't comment on the same. Compared to Apple Music on Android Auto, seems like a pretty decent improvement in Volume, bass and quality. Haven't used AA after the update so not sure if overall it is improved or just on CarPlay.

Good thing is Carplay boots up almost immediately when you start the car unlike Android Auto , which usually showed a Android Auto starting screen on a cold start.

Bad thing is still no ability to pan and move around in maps (Other OEMS Carplay allows this) and have to use the arrow buttons for which you have to outstretch your arm. Selecting Navigation on DID just shows a blank map and no directions unlike AA. That means no AR directions on the HUD either.

You will need to use Apple Maps for that.

Yeah, works on Apple Maps. Just preferred if Google maps gave that as well, as it has much more reliable and better traffic data.

Sharing my subjective opinions in a relatively boring manner:

1. Headlights are indeed remarkable. Never thought those 3 tiny trios to be this effective. The booster lamps activate at 79 kmph and remain operational until the speed decreases below 74 kmph.
2. Ambient lighting significantly enhances the overall ambiance during nocturnal drives.
3. Previously, I considered the third screen to be inconsequential until my recent ~3,900 km round trip. Everyone now loves it, albeit with a desire for additional applications, such as Netflix.
4. AC is a chiller, plus 3 options for Auto is a ++. Kept AC at 25 degrees (both zones), 1 step of Auto and in Econ mode, cooling was adequate even in harsh sunlight.
5. Once you become familiar with the car’s controls, they become intuitive and user-friendly. The touchscreen and steering-mounted controls no longer appear complex or unfamiliar.
6. In my opinion, the haptic controls in the centre console appear visually appealing but have an excessive learning curve.
7. Seats are comfortable; for me, it is just too wide, which isn’t really a con, right?
8. Hornpad extending to corner is brilliant.
9. Everyone is in awe of the tighter turning radius (as compared to the car’s length).
10. Cars draw immense attention, attracting numerous families (not only enthusiasts) who eagerly request to see them. While I personally do not appreciate this attention and hope it diminishes once cars become more commonplace on the roads.
11. Accessories are uncommon, even M&M’s do not offer many accessories. Incidentally, those seeking rear sunblinds can purchase (purchase link for rear sunblind). The quality is merely average, but it effectively functions.
12. The boot gallops a lot,The boot gallops frequently, and beyond the boot, I am greatly impressed by the frunk. As a newcomer to the frunk, I once inadvertently forgot to retrieve luggage from it . It is important to note that items stored in the frunk tend to become quite warm.
13. The ride quality is good, and it appears that the suspensions are being adjusted based on the road conditions. Following the initial service, the low-speed ride quality was enhanced after the software update. In my opinion, the ride quality of this vehicle is superior to that of the Tata Hexa. While the Tata Hexa performes well, the ride quality of XEV 9E is noticeably better.
14. A low-speed nudge has turned off ADAS with malfunction lights. Though the car is drivable sans any ADAS aid, still, a radar being damaged felt like an extreme. The car recognised the rear end and saved the 3-minute footage from all 4 angles in the emergency folder. We can either download via the Me4U mobile app or attach a USB pen drive in the glovebox slot to extract the video. Nifty .
15. The range on highways are good. Personally, with our heavy right foot, we have achieved a range between 425 and 520 kilometres.
16. The car was charging when there was a power loss. This might have thrown a software glitch, and the car showed a 2000 km range! A glimpse of the future?
Mahindra XEV 9e Review-img_3587.jpeg

17. Upon opening the bonnet and the vehicle in “ready to drive” mode, the car enters a limp mode. This safety feature automatically disengages once the bonnet is closed.
18. Wished the lane change indicator could be adjusted for 5 blinks instead of 3.
19. Calibration for rain-sensing wipers and auto headlamps is bang on. My American is really bad in this aspect.
20. First impression of M&M Service Centre and RSA is positive. Similar to German, during a call to RSA, they ask us about our health and if we need any medical assistance (humans over machines).
21. Cooled Armrest is of little to no use.
22. 65W Type-C works well just like wireless chargers.
23. If we consider thoughtful gestures, the car exuded a more German demeanour than an Indian one.
24. Tyre noise is heard and not really as silent as described by M&M (our XEV is running on GoodYear tyres).
25. The ICE is impressive. While I was not particularly impressed during the TD, it took me a week to fully appreciate its capabilities. The subwoofer delivers precise and powerful bass.
26. The autonomous parking feature can be quite intimidating, so I intervened in the process by braking.
27. Forward and backward movement through the keyfob works well and is a show-off feature.
28. The rear seat armrest design is not optimal. Its height is slightly above my preferred level.
29. Doorpads can accommodate 1-litre bottles, and the umbrella section of the doorpad can hold approximately 500-600 ml bottles. The centre console can, at most, accommodate 500 ml bottles.
30. If only four pax (including driver) are in the car, it’s best to remove the centre rear headrest and store it either in the boot or frunk. It helps with rear visibility through IRVM.
31. Ventilated seats are effective and operate silently.
32. In my opinion, the control knob located in the centre console is exceptionally ingenious.
33. Although the brake pedal is predictable, at legal highway speeds, when the car utilises mechanical brakes, the tyres screech even during normal braking.
34. Please utilise ADAS as a drive assistance system rather than a driver replacement. On highways, the system failed to identify heavy vehicles without taillights during nighttime. As mentioned in the owner’s manual, ADAS does take into account taillights.
35. Automated Lane Change works fine for the most part, except for the aggressive turns.
36. The GC is adequate, and the battery appears to be securely installed. As of now, I have not experienced any scrapes, despite the car having been driven extensively in India and having traversed various roads.
37. The hotspot feature is beneficial. At one point, the mall’s basement lacked a network connection for my mobile device. Consequently, I utilised XEV’s hotspot to initiate the charging process. As per the sales advisor, the car’s internet data is limited to 20 GB per month.

Oh yeah, Apple doesn't allow that; Tata cars have the same problem. Try using Apple Maps, just to check if that shows up on the DID.

It does, both in the DID and shows AR directions on the HUD.

Problem is Apple maps doesn't show the directions the way Google maps does on the screen and is more cumbersome. Plus my Apple watch keeps vibrating for each minor curve and turns (i guess would be able to disable it somewhere).

Only positive - Apple maps allows you to Pan and move directly on the screen. Directions are usually not reliable and is very stubborn on the route to take. Doesn't redirect as easily like G maps. The DID directions are too zoomed out for some reason which is nowhere as helpful as the alternative to use that only and free the other screen. (if anyone knows how to change this please do let me know).

This is much needed as LKA is pretty aggressive and one cannot indicate and just change lane right after. With 5 blinks, one would get enough time to indicate and smoothy shift to lane. Currently, the LKA wakes up just after 3 blink, exactly when I am trying to go out, and then it pushes me back inside.

Re: Mahindra XEV 9e Review

Did a Gurgaon - Jaipur - Gurgaon trip

Drive parameters:
  • Solo driving with AC set to 25c and outside temps hitting 46c
  • Driving mode set to Power Saving and cruising at 90km/hr and sometime in Default mode. While coming back, 50% driven in default mode
  • Parked the car for almost 4 hours with AC On
  • Reached Jaipur(~223Kms) using just 42% SOC (with 58% SOC left)
  • Hit 267KM in 50% SOC
  • On return, did a quick food stop of 30 mins and topped with 26% battery for Rs 490
  • Did 515km with 26% SoC left, which means 100% SoC gave 515Kms of range
  • Finished trip at 590KM with 77Km of range left and 14% SoC. Only paid Rs 470 for charging required for the 590KM
  • Car is super amazing! Glad I purchased it. No turning back from EVs now

Irony:
Many people with long highway runs are already on EVs ( BYD/ Ionic/XEV), and people who would drive 99.9% in city are crying over range in EVs.

Fun Fact:
In case you are driving with very less movement, the car nudges the steering wheel and checks your responsiveness. In case you don't acknowledge, it shows this message and shakes the steering!

To test it, yawn multiple times and then make a poker face.

Re: Mahindra XEV 9e Review

To first hand experience all the hype regarding the new Mahindra BE electrics, I reached the showroom nearest to my office. Found out that both the test cars and the display car, have been waiting on a software update and hence, no test drives. Heck, I couldn't even test the sound system due to some error being displayed on it. I bounced from the showroom in 15 mins. Not a very reassuring experience to say the least! Better wait for the electronics to sort out before anyone decides to take the Mahindra EV plunge.

I have experienced this quite often in our car too(2022 Nexon EV prime XZ+ with AA wired to wireless converter, it happens only in phones with an mmWave 5G chip and/or UWB. (Pretty sure it is mmWave). Mostly disconnects when there are lots of power lines above. [Tested this, my pixel 7a and father's onePlus 13R do not disconnect, while my mother's Pixel 8 pro does, and so does her iPhone 12(though less frequently)] Hope this helps!

Re: Mahindra XEV 9e Review

Hi
Has anyone taken an LT6C connection with BESCOM for dedicated EV Charging.
Would like to know the tariff structure.
While I’ve heard that the tariff per unit is 5rs. Are there other charges like fixed charges, FPPCA, P&G surcharge and GST.
If so, the cost difference between a regular 3phase connection and this would be negligible since the regular connection tariff is 5.8Rs.
It’s all the other adding that make it close to 8

If someone has taken the LT6C connection I’d love to see the total breakup and a bill copy if possible
