According to reports, Honda will be introducing its first electric vehicle powered by solid-state batteries by the end of this decade.

The new solid-state EV batteries from Honda are said to be 50% smaller, 35% lighter and 25% cheaper to manufacture compared to the current generation of lithium-ion cells. The solid-state batteries are also much safer and accept much higher charging speeds.

However, the most interesting aspect is that solid-state batteries could pack a driving range of up to 620 miles (1000 km) on a single charge - almost double the range of most mass-market EVs on sale today. Honda even claims that by 2040, they aim to push this range even higher to 776 miles (1250 km) while reducing the size, weight and cost of the batteries themselves.

Honda has already announced that it has built a pilot production facility to figure out how to make solid-state batteries on a mass scale. Test production is set to begin soon.

Takeshi Ueda, Chief Engineer of Innovative Research Excellence, Honda R&D, stated, "That’s why we have created the pilot line to identify and deal with any issues in terms of size and mass production as soon as possible. We have to make our prototype battery 100 times bigger. We are working on how to bring them to the mass production phase."

Honda though isn't the only carmaker working on solid-state battery tech, with brands like Toyota, BMW, Nissan and Volkswagen also developing the same.

The potential for solid-state batteries to increase the driving range of electric vehicles is truly exciting. Achieving a range of up to 1000 km on a single charge would be a remarkable milestone, nearly doubling the current capabilities of most mass-market EVs, and will lure people like me who are sitting on the fence between ICE and EVs.

Solid-state batteries share good advantages over Li-ion like high energy density, higher charging speed, and better lifespan; they are also very costly to manufacture compared to the Li-ion (at least today). Also, according to me, Li-ion is a more established technology and reaches a certain maturity where solid-state battery technology needs quite some time to reach to.

Certainly, new tech will come in for the betterment of mankind and will need some time to prove it.

After all, who could imagine a 1000-1200 km range for EVs 5-7 years back?

Kudos to the Science. :)

As the often repeated cliche goes, the proof is in the pudding. The Japanese Car makers, particularly Toyota has been talking about the solid state batteries for long and have been saying about EV's with magical properties for quite some time all the while saying EVs are not reliable. I will start taking them seriously when the "will be introducing" changes to "has introduced".

Hi, I am hoping that by the end of 2025 or early 2026, South Korea & Taiwan will launch their SSD EV Battery for the mass market EVs. I also hope around this time China will also bring their SSD EV Battery which will be 40% lighter than BYD Blade Battery with MIDC range of 1200km in single charge (in roughly 79kWh to 86kWh battery pack).
