Its portfolio consisted of a crossover, a sedan and an MPV. Earlier this year, at the 2025 Auto Expo the company went on to showcase an SUV, which would be launched soon. Called the Sealion 7, it comes in two variants - Premium (rear-wheel drive) and Performance (all-wheel drive). Both variants come with an 82.56 kWh BYD Blade battery pack. The Premium variant puts out a healthy 308 BHP & 380 Nm, while the Performance variant makes a whopping 523 BHP & 690 Nm and has a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 4.5 seconds! BYD Sealion 7 Price & BrochureThe Premium and Performance variants of the BYD Sealion 7 are priced at Rs. 48.90 lakh and Rs. 54.90 lakh, respectively. Considering the fact that this car is a performance SUV that is being imported into India as a CBU, we think it is well priced for what it offers. Team-BHP Support ![]() | Design & StylingThe Sealion 7 is built on an EV-specific platform (e-platform 3.0). Based on BYD's "Ocean Aesthetics" design concept, it looks more like a crossover than a traditional SUV with a lower height. It has multiple curves and is sleek and aerodynamic. The car measures 4,830 mm in length, 1,925 mm in width, and 1,620 mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,930 mm. Notable features on the outside include an "Ocean X" face, "Starlit Ocean" Double-U LED headlights, LED DRLs, "Ocean Horizon" connected LED tail-lamps, flush door handles, sloping roofline, and 20-inch alloy wheels with red brake calipers (Performance variant). The Sealion 7 is available in four colours - Shark Gray, Aurora White, Atlantis Gray and Cosmos Black (our test car). Build Quality, Fit & FinishThe Sealion 7 is imported into India as a CBU. Overall, the build quality of the car feels impressive. The lower portion of the doors has a little bit of flex (not something to be concerned about), but everywhere else, the sheet metal feels stiff and solid. The panel gaps are tight and consistent across the car. The paint quality is good too. Wheels & TyresThe Performance variants of the BYD Sealion 7 gets 20-inch alloy wheels shod with 245/45 section tyres. Our test car had Michelin Pilot Sport tyres. They provided excellent grip in the corners. The recommended tyre pressure is 42 PSI all around, which is on the higher side. The Premium variant comes with 19-inch wheels and 235/50 & 255/45 section tyres at the front and rear, respectively. Ground ClearanceBYD hasn’t specified the ground clearance of the Sealion 7. However, it appears to be more than adequate for Indian conditions. Our test car had no issues tackling speed breakers and even some mild off-roading. Standard & Extended WarrantyThis Sealion 7 is powered by an 82.56 kWh Blade Battery that comes with an 8-year warranty. Besides that, the car gets a low voltage LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery. Those who book the car till 17 February, will be eligible for a 7-year or 1,50,000 km warranty (whichever comes first) on the low voltage battery. Other details about the warranty haven’t been disclosed yet. SafetyThe Sealion 7 is loaded with safety features like 11 airbags, a 360-degree camera, driver attention warning, TPMS, traction control system, ABS + EBD, electronic stability program, hill decent control, hill-hold control, electronic parking brake with auto hold, adaptive cruise control and ISOFIX child seat anchors, electronic child lock, intelligent power brake system, high beam assist and level 2 ADAS features such as automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind spot detection, lane departure warning, lane departure prevention, emergency lane keeping assist, forward collision warning, intelligent cruise control, traffic sign recognition, intelligent speed limit control, front & rear cross-traffic alert & brake and more. Additionally, the Performance variant gets BYD's Intelligence Torque Adaption Control (iTAC) system which adjusts the torque of the front and rear axles dynamically according to road conditions. The Sealion 7 has not been crash-tested by NCAP or other independent bodies. Last edited by Aditya : 17th February 2025 at 18:36. |

Team-BHP Support ![]() | Cabin Design & QualityJust like the exterior, BYD has used the Ocean series design for the interior of the Sealion 7. It gets a digital 10.25-inch LCD instrument cluster that is nicely integrated into the dashboard and like other BYD cars, a 15.6-inch rotatable touchscreen head unit in the centre. It has an all-black interior with gunmetal, chrome and glossy black inserts. Soft touch materials including leather have been used at places on the dashboard, door pads and centre console. Even the glovebox lid uses soft touch material. The quality of the plastics used is very good throughout and the fit & finish are excellent. Space & ComfortGetting in and out of the Sealion 7 is easy. It’s not low like a sedan or very high off the ground like a traditional SUV. So you don't need to bend down or climb into the cabin - just walk in. On the inside, there’s plenty of space. The front passengers don’t sit too close to each other thanks to a wide centre console. However, the all-black interior doesn’t feel as airy as a lighter-coloured one. Thankfully, the car comes with a large glass roof, which helps matters. Front seats are draped in genuine leather upholstery. The driver seat is 12-way adjustable (including lumbar and extendable seat base) while the passenger seat is 6-way adjustable. Both front seats are fully electrically adjustable and ventilated. The cushioning is on point. Driving Position & ErgonomicsFrontal visibility is excellent. As mentioned earlier, both front seats are electrically adjustable, the driver seat gets lumbar and under-thigh support adjustments along with a memory function. The steering gets tilt & telescopic adjustment and it is easy to find a comfortable driving position. However, do note that if you are a taller driver who likes to sit high and upright, due to the angle of the front windshield, you will find yourself sitting too close to the sunvisor. The ORVMs too come with tilt-on-reverse and position memory functions. The steering wheel has a four-spoke design and is wrapped in leather. It’s nice to hold and has thumb contours as well. The hornpad will be a stretch for those with small hands. Overall, the cabin is well laid out, and all the controls are ergonomically placed. Cabin StorageThere is a good amount of storage space for the front passengers. The door pockets can accommodate a 1-litre bottle and other small items. The glovebox has a soft lining and is large enough to hold the owner’s manual and other items. You also get a deep storage box under the centre armrest, two adjustable cupholders, one wireless charging pad and a slot to keep another smartphone next to it. A large open storage space with Type-A and Type-C USB charging ports and a 12V power outlet has been provided below the gear console. Rear passengers get door pockets that can hold a 1-litre bottle and small articles each. The seatbacks of the front seats have a large pocket each and two smaller ones to hold smartphones. Type-A & Type-C USB charging ports and 2 bag hooks have been provided below the rear A/C vents and on the B-pillars, respectively. The rear centre armrest houses two retractable cupholders and a shallow soft-lined storage space with a lid. Air-ConditioningThe Sealion 7 comes with a dual-zone climate control system. We drove the car in and around Jaipur which was fairly hot. The A/C did an excellent job of cooling the cabin. There’s not much of a drop in the performance of the air conditioning while driving in Eco mode. Rear A/C vents have been provided as well. The car also comes with a built-in CN95 and PM2.5 air filter, which, in today’s day and age, is a necessity in metro cities. FeaturesUnique & Noteworthy FeaturesThe Sealion 7 is loaded with features. Noteworthy features include the Vehicle-to-Load mobile power supply function, which transforms the car into a power bank (you will need an adapter that can be purchased as an add-on), a 15.6-inch rotatable touchscreen and a card key that you can tap on the driver-side ORVM to unlock the car. Apart from these features, the car is equipped with a panoramic glass roof with an electrically operated sunshade, soundproof double-glazed glass (front windshield and front doors), privacy glass (rear windows and rear windshield), ventilated front seats, reclining rear seats, head-up display, 12-speaker DYNAUDIO sound system, 128-colour ambient lighting, electric tailgate with handsfree functionality, automatic headlamps with high beam assist, rain-sensing wipers, wireless charger and smartphone connectivity with wireless Android Auto & Apple CarPlay. You do miss out on some features like connected car technology, and a spare wheel. Audio System & Sound QualityThe Sealion 7 comes with a 15.6-inch floating rotatable touchscreen infotainment head unit. There’s no lag, and jumping through different options and screens is pretty seamless. The interface is very user-friendly, and finding the right function is easy. It comes with a voice assistant, Bluetooth connectivity as well as wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The system is paired with a 12-speaker DYNAUDIO sound system which includes a subwoofer in the boot. Coming to the sound quality, we found it very clear and with no distortion even at higher volumes. There are lots of settings to play around with. However, we did not find the audio to be as immersive as some other premium systems we have experienced in recent times. Rear Seat Comfort & SpaceDespite the coupe-like roofline, getting in and out of the rear seats is easy. The rear seat comes with 3 adjustable headrests and 3-point seatbelts for all 3 passengers. However, the hard backrest in the middle (due to the centre armrest) and rear A/C vents mean that an adult third passenger in the middle won’t be very comfortable. A child will be able to bear it though. There’s a good amount of knee room and adequate headroom even for tall passengers. The backrest can be reclined for the rear passengers to find a comfortable angle, and the cushioning is spot-on. However, like in most EVs the floor is high and coupled with a low placed seat, it results in a knees-up seating position. Unless you tuck your feet under the front seats, you will complain about a lack of under-thigh support. Rear passengers get a centre armrest with two retractable cupholders and a storage space with a lid, seatback pockets, smartphone pockets, bag hooks, A/C vents and Type-A and Type-C USB charging ports. Boot SpaceThe Sealion 7 has a boot space of 500 litres with the rear seats up. The 60:40 split rear seats can be folded down to increase cargo space. Additionally, the frunk can hold 58 litres of luggage. Last edited by Aditya : 17th February 2025 at 09:02. |

Team-BHP Support ![]() | Driving the BYD Sealion 7 PerformanceUnder the bonnet is a 58-litre frunk without a cover: ![]() The Sealion 7 uses BYD's e-Platform 3.0 which is shared with the Seal sedan. As it is an EV-specific platform, the batteries and powertrain have been designed with the EV-specific requirements in mind. This platform comes with cell-to-body technology which integrates the battery and the vehicle body floor together making the battery's sandwich structure evolve into a sandwich structure for the complete vehicle. As mentioned earlier, the Sealion 7 comes with an 82.56 kWh BYD Blade battery pack. Additionally, the car gets a Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) low-voltage battery instead of a lead acid battery. BYD claims that this battery is up to 6 times lighter than a conventional low-voltage battery. It has 5 times better self-discharge consumption and a lifespan of 15 years. We got to drive the Performance variant which gets all-wheel drive and an electric motor that develops 523 BHP and 690 Nm. It has a motor speed of 23,000 rpm. With your foot on the brake pedal, hit the Start/Stop button to bring the electric motor to life. Shift to ‘D’ mode, take your foot off the brake pedal and the car gets off the line in a very smooth manner. In the city, you will appreciate the Sealion’s smoothness. The power delivery till part throttle is linear and predictable. No jerks from gearshifts and no engine sound means it is an extremely refined experience. Floor the A pedal and you will be greeted with instant acceleration. Performance is strong with power available right from the get-go. BYD claims a 0-100 km/h time of 4.5 seconds, which, despite the car's 2,340 kg kerb weight, is easily believable. You’ll dart ahead of most cars when the signal turns green. Out on the highway, the Sealion 7 is a very strong performer. It can get up to triple-digit speeds and maintain them without effort. Overtaking slower vehicles is very easy. Just floor the accelerator pedal and you will zoom past the car ahead. You'll hit silly speeds effortlessly and not even realize it due to the lack of drama (engine noise, etc.). BYD claims that the Sealion 7 can touch a top speed of 215 km/h. However, if you drive hard, the range will drop faster. There are 3 driving modes to choose from and unlike some other cars, these aren't gimmicky. They're mapped specifically for different driving styles and also change the steering weight. • Normal Mode: This is the default mode to drive in and works well in the city as well as on the highway. It is a good balance of power and economy. The steering is light in this driving mode. • Eco Mode: When you want to extract maximum range, this is the mode to engage. The throttle response is dumbed down which results in a smoother drive. However, you never feel that the car is lacking power. There’s still enough power on tap to keep up with the traffic and make those quick overtakes. We found this mode to be the best for driving in the city. The difference in steering weight from normal mode is very small. It almost makes the Normal mode redundant. • Sport Mode: The throttle response is sharpened, but power is still delivered linearly. It doesn't feel jerky for day-to-day city driving. Push hard and it provides tremendous acceleration. One thing to note is that driving in Sport mode eats up battery faster. So it's best to use this mode on the highways when you want to have some fun while driving. The steering is firmed up in this mode. The brakes feel a little sharper too. Additionally, there’s a snow mode for better traction in snowy conditions. Insulation sheet under the bonnet: ![]() Windshield washer fluid reservoir is placed on the left: ![]() Regenerative BrakingBYD has kept it simple with regenerative braking. There are only 2 levels – Standard and High. The Standard level is barely noticeable and if you have the car in this mode, you might end up using the brakes a lot. The High level very much resembles engine braking in IC engine cars. It’s not very intrusive and you won’t be getting a head nod every time you lift off the accelerator. It’s great for driving around in the city as well as on the highways. People wishing to do hypermiling will wish for stronger regeneration from the motor. Noise, Vibration & Harshness (NVH)As is the case with EVs, the Sealion 7 is also super quiet. There’s no engine or gearbox to make any noise, so the overall driving experience is silent. The windshield and front windows feature soundproof double-glazed glass making the car cabin extremely quiet. At highway speeds, the wind noise is well controlled and the tyre noise is par for the course. The motor spins silently at high speeds and the whine is very well controlled. RangeThe Premium and Performance variants come with a claimed range of 567 km and 542 km, respectively. That is however the NEDC (New European Driving Cycle) range which is an indicated number. In real-world driving conditions, you can expect lower figures. We were not able to perform a real-world range test in the short time that we had with the car. We’ll wait for some ownership reviews for a clearer picture of the car's real-world range. ChargingWhen you buy a BYD Sealion, you get a complimentary 7 kW home charger along with free installation. BYD has not shared the charging time though. If you ever run out of battery, you can always contact BYD’s roadside assistance. The car has an AC charging port - Type 2 (11kW) as well as a DC Charging Port - CCS 2 (150kW). You also get a 3kW portable charger that can be plugged into any 15 Amp socket (the larger 3-pin sockets used for ACs and fridges), but that would take a very long time to charge from 0-100%. Ride ComfortThe Sealion gets a double wishbone suspension at the front and multi-link suspension at the rear. It comes with frequency selective damping shock absorbers. The Performance variant rides on 20-inch wheels shod with 245/45 section tyres. The low-speed ride is firm and all the cracks and bumps on the road are felt inside the cabin. What's nice is that the suspension works silently. The recommended tyre pressure is a rather high 42 psi and at this pressure, you do feel a lot of the road. Dropping the pressure while driving in the city might make the ride more comfortable. At higher speeds, the ride does improve, but big potholes will register themselves inside and you will have to be careful while tackling them. The Premium variant runs on 19-inch wheels slightly taller rubber. It might have a better ride. Handling & DynamicsIn a straight line, the Sealion 7 feels very stable. It doesn’t feel nervous and maintains its composure at high speeds. The stiff suspension keeps the car planted while going over some undulations or expansion joints. Coming to handling, the body roll is very well controlled and the Sealion 7 changes direction easily without any unnerving incidents. The Michelin Pilot Sport tyres that our test car was shod with provided excellent grip at all speeds. Even on hard cornering, the Sealion 7 never felt nervous. SteeringThe Sealion 7 comes with an electric power steering. This is a nice unit and easy to operate as well. It is very light at city speeds which makes it very user-friendly. The steering weighs up fairly well on the highways. It is accurate but relays little feedback. BrakingThe Sealion 7 has ventilated and drilled discs at the front and ventilated discs at the rear. The Performance variant gets red calipers. The car has good stopping power and emergency braking situations are handled well too. On the flip side, the brake pedal lacks feel and takes some time to get used to. Last edited by Aditya : 17th February 2025 at 09:02. |

Infractions: 0/1 (5) | Re: BYD Sealion 7 Review Great review, I think the byd sealion 7 will have many takers, even more so than the seal given the SUV practicality. I have been trying to find the 19inch wheels version, does anyone have the premium variant alloys design, i think the longer range and a better ride would be my pick over the quicker acceleration, the 6 second 0-100 is quick enough. |

| Re: BYD Sealion 7 Review If BYD prices it aggressively at 55 lacs on road, at or below the BMW ix1 lwb, then BYD will achieve strong sales. After a long time, we might have a car that is worthy of its price in the 40 to 70 lacs price bracket. |

I think this is the first car in India which uses LFP for low voltage needs. Given that cars have become very reliable, 12V battery related issues have become the biggest source of irritant even on cars perceived to have good reliability like Toyota. Moving to LFP will cut down these issues drastically but I wonder how much these batteries cost which will determine their adoption. It's a no brainer for luxury vehicles. | |

| Re: BYD Sealion 7 Review I test drove the car this weekend, and I must add that this easily beats Q3, Skoda kodiaq and equivalents on most parameters. This is simply an outstanding car with no competition on this side of 1 cr! If BYD prices it sensibly, considering their brand value at this point, they have a market leader in their hand. |

| Re: BYD Sealion 7 Review Unlike Seal the Sealion seems to get a roof cover though it’s not entirely clear in the pictures. If this is the case, given its SUV stance, it seems to be a more compelling buy compared to it’s sedan sibling. |
