Jaguar Land Rover cancels plan to build EVs in India

Jaguar Land Rover has reportedly canceled its plans to manufacture EVs at Tata Motors’ plant in southern India.

According to media reports, JLR was unable to find the right price-quality balance for locally sourced EV parts. Talks with local suppliers have also been halted. Work on the project has been suspended for about 2 months as global demand for electric cars slows down.

JLR’s decision to shelve plans to manufacture its EVs in India is also expected to affect Tata Motors. As per the report, the launch of Tata’s premium EVs under the Avinya brand could be delayed as they share platforms and components with other JLR-branded EVs.

Tata is setting up a new manufacturing unit in Tamil Nadu. The new plant is nearing completion and is expected to begin operations in September. It will have a capacity of 2,50,000 units per annum once it reaches full capacity in 5-7 years.

Wouldn't you have figured this out before planning to set up a plant or at least put in a vendor development plan?

When I read the news, the exact same question popped into my head. I came here to write it, and yours preceded mine.

I suppose JLR can't openly admit that their bet on EVs is taking the backseat.

If that's the case, I wonder how the West and the rest of the world plan to take on the might of the Chinese EV industry!

I think this decision might also be due to the anticipated tax cuts for imported EVs. JLR might not see the point in manufacturing here when they can just utilise the existing capacity in UK.

...
Wasn't this obvious from parent Tata Motor's EV journey so far? Their EVs still suffer from poor quality and significant issues in batteries and electricals.
Other EV makers in India seem to do fine. So, the challenges are specific to Tata Motors sourcing and production chain in India.

While it might be the case, if you read about Jaguar's past adventures with EVs, it is equally bad or even worse than Indian EV manufacturers. Their EVs were riddled with issues and lack of spares/ human resources to fix those multiplied it further. Have a look at the photos. Not a good sight for cars costing a bomb and looking nice externally ready to get scrapped.

I think our suppliers should first focus on getting better quality at reasonable costs for mainstream EVs, learn from it and then take the next step.

I believe that Tata Motors will have a new EV partner in the near future. A couple of days ago there was a news that Tesla and VW tapping Tata Motors for joint venture to manufacture EV's in India. This might be one of the reasons for abandoning the plan after two years of planning.

Acko and other news outlets have just posted about the construction of the plant which has been completed by 90% and the statement released by the Tata Motors team, but there is no mention on the platform.

Right on point. Apart from that, the USA has become a top and major market with sales improvement of 40% in the last calendar year for JLR. With Trump's tariffs coming out of nowhere on UK products, JLR management might have been planning to manufacture their cars in the US.

let's wait and see what TATA motors has in their armor for indians.

Re: Jaguar Land Rover cancels plan to build EVs in India

Balancing price-quality is a challenge for all automobile manufacturers in India, because of heavy taxation. Precisely the reason why we Indian consumers end up with cars that cut corners on safety and features.
