Controls in electric car

Can anyone please say what are the controls in electric car (eg. Reva)?

Is there clutch & gearbox?

Theoretically, in electric motor, torque is nearly constant at any RPM. So, I wonder in case they provide gearbox in electric car, how many gears are there.

for locomotives (and other similar purposes) series motor is used, where speed decreases if load is increased. the speed control at higher RPM is done by running some coils in parallel, and then shifting to series when desired speed is achived. some amount of resistance is also used to control the voltage. i saw that long time ago, as far as i remember an eletrical loco has 64 notches in all.

I beleve reva should either have this kind of arrangement, or some trick with the battery arrangement (putting in series and parallel) to achive variable voltage. kind of shifting gear operation. the pedal cud be connected to a microprocessor.

let's wait for the experts on this.

From Reva customer service

[FONT=Arial][SIZE=3]
I asked to Reva customer service directly and they sent me this info. So, Reva has neither clutch nor gearbox!
REVA – Features
REVA is safe and reliable
The Power Pack is housed beneath the seats. This lowers REVA’s center of gravity, provides high stability and improves maneuverability. Side impact beams, a specially developed steel frame and electronic regenerative braking add to a high level of reliability and safety. REVA’s body panels are made of ABS and are dent proof. Besides, there is a special crush zone beneath the bonnet. This protects the vehicle and the passengers in the event of an inadvertent skirmish with another vehicle.

REVA has been tested extensively and completed approximately 10,00,000 kms of roadworthiness.

REVA is easy to drive
With its absence of an engine, gears or clutch, REVA is ideal for "stop and start" city driving. The high motor torque (70Nm) enables quick acceleration. Its compact size and small turning radius makes it easy to maneuver and park. The suspension consists of MacPherson strut in the front and coil spring at the rear, which allows for good road handling and a smooth drive.

REVA is easy to maintain
With REVA, engine tuning, change of engine oils and filters, replacement of spark plugs and mufflers are all things of the past.

REVA is very economical
  1. Running cost
REVA uses 9 units of electricity for a single full charge that gives 80-km range in city driving conditions. This works out to 40 paise per km, assuming that 1 unit of electricity costs Rs.3.50.

  2. Maintenance cost
Since REVA does not have an engine, clutch or gears, or a carburetor, radiator, exhaust, etc., the maintenance cost is low. Estimates show that it is just about 40% of the maintenance cost of a small car like Maruti 800 over a 3-year ownership period.

If your total local running is 1000 km per month, then your running cost will be only Rs.400 calculated at 40 paise per km.

Besides, the expected maintenance cost per REVA for the first 3 years is only around Rs.4,500/-. The Power Pack has a life of 50,000 km that translates into about 4-5 years of normal use. This, at today’s cost, is around Rs.50,000/- approximately

  3. Purchase cost
Apart from the amazing running and maintenance costs, companies like yours that
invest in REVA have some other unique benefits.

The road tax has been waived on REVA. Besides, the Government of India has allowed 80% depreciation in the first year. Thus, a company that buys REVA at an assumed price of Rs.3,20,000/- has an effective cost of only Rs.1,55,392/- by factoring in the effect of 80% depreciation at a tax rate of 35.7% on depreciation as per the IT Act. The tax shield is therefore, about Rs.91,392/-.

REVA is eco-friendly
Being an electric vehicle, REVA is non polluting and quite noiseless. REVA will be a boon to our society and organisations that buy it would make a big contribution by reducing pollution levels in the city.

Unique power pack
REVA’s Power Pack consists of eight 6-Volt EV type lead acid batteries that can be charged "anywhere, anytime" using 220V (15 Amp) power supply. REVA has an on-board charger that is computer controlled and has a built-in stabiliser and auto shut-off mechanism. The charge time is 6 hours though 80% of the full charge can be attained in 21/2 hours.

State-of-art electronics
REVA has two computers on board. These make up a state of art Energy Management System (EMS). The EMS performs five key functions that collectively improve performance and reduce cost. These are charger control, State-of-Charge (SoC) estimation, vehicle diagnostics, battery warranty verification and vehicle data acquisition (DAQ). The EMS also controls the outputs on the REVA instrument panel, such as the SoC meter, an efficiency gauge, and the diagnostic indicators. The EMS communicates with a handheld diagnostic unit (or a palmtop) for data acquisition and service diagnostics.

REVA for companies
REVA will find large appeal with companies for use by the following category of people:
  • Personnel attached to Sales & Service Departments
  • Personnel attached to Vendor Development Department
  • Personnel attached to the Administration and accounts Departments
  • Maintenance personnel
  • Security personnel
  • Middle Management employees, etc.
REVA is also a perfect perquisite for your employees, which enhances not only the morale but also the employee retention.
