^^I don't get it. How can a turtle whose natural habitat is somewhere in Singapore, be permitted as a pet in India which has completely different environmental conditions?

In the same way German Shepherd Dog, a native of Germany, is permitted as a pet in India which has completely different environmental conditions.

Actually, RES turtles can adjust to tropical climate, and are popular pets in many parts of the world.

And, its is a native of US, from where they are exported to Far east Asia, where its a delicacy. The remaining ones are then exported as pets from Singapore to India & other nations.

Singapore's climate is like Southern India. it's nearer to the equator, but it rains more regularly.

Also, since it is kept in a controlled aquarium environment, the geographical location would have a lesser impact w.r.t. the ambient temperature, fauna etc....these can be controlled, I'm not sure how much impact the height above sea level would have. In any case, it's not as bizarre as keeping Siberian Huskies or St. Bernards in hot and humid Indian cities.

Dogs are built the way to adopt themselves to the climatic conditions not turtles.

You can't compare a dog with turtles please. Huskies and St. Bernard have fur to gain heat in their body because they are creatures of cold places, but when they stay in hot places, their apetite, coat, behaviour changes too. That is the main reason you find so many breeds in Dogs.

As far as I know, the fur, like our woolen coats, does not help GAIN heat, it just insulates against losing the heat generated due to the body temperature.
I haven't seen Huskies or St. Bernards in Bangalore losing what I'd consider adequate amounts of fur to allow for the heat loss required to compensate for the significant difference in ambient temperatures ( < 0 deg. C in the Alps to > 30 deg. C here). The body temperature as measured internally would not typically vary by a few degrees at most in the two environments.

And I would still consider it easier to thermally regulate an aquarium to suit the turtles' environmental conditions than to insulate an entire house using air conditioning to help the St. Bernard adapt.

Correct me if I'm wrong, since I've not done any scientific browsing around to collate data (and I don't think I would be making too much of a strenuous effort to do so, since I've neither turtles nor St. Bernards at home). In case there is any link that is easily available to help shed some light either way, I would appreciate the information.

With fish, reptiles, etc, we can give them whatever climate they require. We cannot do this for dogs

Well turtles adapt to any weather, water, climate, flimate condition. In short whatever be the surroundings. I have same ones but just SIX of them. Two are of similar size as dark_horizon's & four as small as 2 rupee coin.
Interestingly Turtles can also easily adapt to FW as well as SW.

This is from my personal exp of dealing with water creatures since last 15 years.

I have total eight tanks of fishes & also make tanks as one of my hobby. Thus the number of tanks keep changing. You can see a "HUGE" tank that I had made for one client recently. I had posted the sketch 3d diagrams in Post no 1412 on Page 95. I have given dimension some posts before that.
As to Turtles, These guys are my dogs now ;) Two of them love the spare bathroom & spend most of their time there and they are smart enough to never go near the drain. The other four are too small so have kept in a shallow tank. Its a riot when all four are on the floor. I have to tiptoe so that I do not acciodently step on them. The younger ones love to nibble on my toes. One of them is a strict socks eater. Man do I love them..
In fact the senior ones have helped me break ice with most lovely girls in my society. ;)

I have once bought a turtle from a shop, and i asked him how to keep them, the shopkeeper has got a aquarium where he has made a hill of pebbles and some water and kept all the turtles there, but he told me to put the turtle in my fish aquarium only,
and the same day only my turtle succumbed, i do not know why, i have seen turtles living in aquariums with fishes but mine died the same day, after that i did not have the courage to buy again, he was so sweet.

Yes you can keep them in an aquarium but there should be a slab or something where he can rest above water.

I also guess it depends on the kind of turtle you got weather they survive on water or not.

how can i get a legal turtle in india, could any one of you tell me the way and possibly the turtle should be able to live in the aquarium with my fishes.

I got a 4 month old Mastiff at home. Can anyone suggest me how to keep my 2 GSDs not to be jealous of the new puppy?

Both of them do not let the puppy play. whenever the puppy is active and wants to run away, both of them catch him with mouth and pin him down. The puppy gives a good fight back but one of my GSD is too hard on him. He catches his ears too hard to bear and the puppy starts crying. It is very well noticeable that the GSDs are not liking the new one,

I am really scared letting them alone and always make sure I am wherever the puppy goes so that the GSDs do not harm him.

All 3 are males. GSDs are 1.6 years and Mastiff is 4 months old. I have never trained either of them. Any suggestions on how to keep all of them happy?

@ruchirnt: Look at dh pictures & you'll note that turtles are 'posing' on stone slab. These domestic turtles cannot breathe under water & thus its better to have a sepearte shallow tank for them. Mine is hardly six inches high & I have placed common flat rock & two floating wooden pieces inside. They just cmilmb on top of these & rest or play. The water level can also be changed so that they can keep their stretched heads out of water. The bigger ones now roam freely in my house & have their water fill from the spare bathroom. In fact we call it "KACHUA-BATHROOM" now.

Legal turtles?? Just ask your pet shop & he will be able to help you. In fact the 'dh' turtles are the legal type so you can carry a pic of them to your pet shop.
