I figured it out because I know how PS blur works. Also, the edges of the car has a notable difference in length of the blur lines. If you want to apply PS motion blur, make sure you mask the edges in the right way. I am posting an eg for you.

The car was parked and I clicked it while I was crossing the road. So all the blur you see is pp blur. Yet it is slightly more believable due to the careful selection mask I had made for the car, with the right amount of edge feathering. When doing pp, pay a lot of attention to edges. The pixels of the edge must match the softness of the pixels around it. I hope this helped, or did I confuse you ?

TG, Many thanks for all the explanation. Yes I understood what you said completely. Only thing is that I am not very careful with my selections and the edge feathering most of the time since it is time consuming and I look for quick results - my bad. I sometimes gets annoyed by the way magnetic lasso works and tends to use the manual one more often. this takes more time, plus I don't have a peripheral on which I can draw. :( Sometimes, making a perfect selection is hard.

The motion blur example you posted also looks very real. One more question: How do you arrive upon the perfect feathering of selection depending upon the softness of the original edges? Trial and error?

Coming to the SantaFe shot, I should say that the PPed mountains looked very real in the shot. Some precise editing there!

Yes trial and error and experience. Don't use lasso, use the pen tool. It is better suited for this kind of job. Yes, making the perfect selection is hard and also can create issues, sometimes its how imperfect your selection is that counts

But u must be able control the imperfections!

In the Santafe shot, the pped mountains are very much real ones, that I had shot at a different locale

thats probably why they look real!

TG, you seem to have gotten the hang of how Rudra achieves the shine on the car, so prominent in his car pics. Could you please explain that workflow, please?

I have a long way to go before learning Rudra's techniques. What I do is selectively apply adjustments to only the highlights. It is a completely manual process, no short cuts. It is just like painting. If you have a strong base in painting, I feel it really makes the job easy.

@TG: Thanks! I've been using lasso tools to make selections. Now will try with pen tool. I agree with the imperfect selection point.

For the SantaFe shot, I meant the way mountains are blended into the picture looks very real, I know it is a real shot of the mountains.

@bensb, TG: I sometimes duplicate the pic layer and apply blending mode hard lighting in selected areas of the body only, to give a polished look but it is sometimes a disaster with 100% opacity so I'll reduce it to something like 30 or so. But I know this is a crude method.
