Yes.. It is a white cheeked barbet. There is a group in fb named bird watchers of Kerala. You can get info about all birds from there.

That is real soul food, Durango Dude! I haven't been to Kodaikanal yet, only heard folks raving about it - and now I fully endorse their view! Terrific.

This is eye-ball to eye-ball stuff - great capture, RajaTaurus! How did it end? I mean which one ended up eating the other?

Somehow, I found both dead, in the same position.

Re: The Official non-auto Image thread

From the terrace last week, Lucknow, June 2017.
The squirrel and the shikra both fully aware of each other, with barely 20 ft separating the tree trunk & the fence. The squirrel has managed to dodge the shikra successfully so far - for the past few weeks! It quickly takes refuge in the foliage, which seems to foil the shikra's efforts – much to it’s embarrassment I’m sure.

That female Shikra is a juvenile probably trying to hone it's hunting skills! Good shot of the two! Hope you get a chance to see and capture the 'encounter' too!

Yes, I have the same suspicion - a pair of shikras (possibly the same pair) have been nesting in the same tree for the past couple of seasons & I have posted a few photos of them earlier. I am no ornithologist, but it seems that this one is definitely slimmer than the nesting pair. So yes Durango Dude, you are probably right! And as for the 'encounter', I'll be honest & say that my best wishes are with the squirrel, hoping that it survives!

Thank you.. I stay close to Nelliyampathy. I know the place quite well. There is lot of scope for birding in Nelliyampathy. Great hornbill being the star attraction. You can pm me anytime for details.
