Was just trying my hand at creating HDR image

Clicked with Canon 400D

Lens: 18-55mm Kit lens

Excellent colors, really. Superb
But
First 2 have a little to much noise and are not too sharp. Well we can discount that.
The last pic is the saddest of the lot, because it could have been so much better.
Your horizon line is cutting bang in the middle of the shot, and it has reduced the appeal of the picture.
All you have now is a simply very beautiful picture, but if you had made a better composition, the picture would have been a masterpiece good enough to grace the walls of a upscale art library.

Try a software called qtfpsgui.
Its more powerful than photomatix(but harder to master)
But the best part it its free and open source.

What should he have done in this case. I am asking because several times when I am shooting water bodies I am faced with this problem. I cannot get more water or sky without tilting the camera, something I am reluctant to do.

1. you can crop out excess sky or water in PP
2. You can tilt the cam, and see how it looks

actually last evening's photography trip was to try my hand at HDR, will try that other software you said.
@tsk- you seemed to have been posting the same time that I was, so didnt see your suggestions.

my reason for composing the shot like this was,

i wanted the stationary boat in the foreground, the subject boat near the centre and the sky's colour in the background.
do you think a vertical shot would have worked? i dont like tilting the camera, I always want my horizon dead horizontal.
my bother who was with me had taken a tilted shot i think, of the same pic, will see if i can post it for comparison.
@TSK, is it ok to post the same pic after cropping out the excess sky ?so that the others can see what happens.

Rudra, the painted desert is actually unnatural in color, besides I don't remember it too well after 9 years. So I didn't try fixing the color too much.

If I go strictly by your scanned picture: There's yellow in the sky.
There's magenta on green.
You need little push of yellow on rocks.

All these can be fixed for sure. Have it scanned again (from a better scanner) if you really wish. Rest is easy as you know.

thanks samurai!I dont mind at all! its an honour!
I think Tsk wanted me to crop out some of the sky in Attachment 1369. but this seems to work well. the boatman and the sunset seem to balance each other well.

Attachment 1370This crop that you did also works very well. i was trying too hard to include the ornamental lamp in the bottom left corner., but cutting it out looks better.

Attachment 1371 the picture wasnt sharp enough for a tight crop like you have done, so didnt attempt it. it was an overambitious shot anyway. with so little light and the fisherman working very hard, there was no way i could have made it clearer.

also, i think I may have left the camera in manual focus in my hurry to shoot as many pics as possible before the light went

@samurai- i preferred the shots of the painted desert that you posted initially, but they are all great, even the ones with yellow in them.

Thanks rippergeo. The fun part about composition is that, it can be done in so many way, it is an art rather than science. You start off with rules, then learn how to break them aesthetically.

It was taken in the days when I was very ignorant about photography, most of those shots don't have much hope.

Just 3 pictures 400D doesn't allow more than 3. I tried using 5 manualy but couldnot get required results.
