Nice one, very expressive. You made her to this feeling by showing your cam? She might have thought its a big gun .

Nice try Shaju, but I wish you were a bit closer when you took that shot . I think the face is a little out of focus.

I got my hands on some glassware last night and am dying to try some lighting techniques on them. Tonight, the experiments begin!

You tell me whats your plan, I am free on Saturday and happy within the city somewhere.

Its 35mm at f/1.8 and the kid was moving. Very tough to shoot kids with it, unless you know to hypnotize them ! I think I need to use the birding techniques to shoot them in focus (AF-C and faster shutter speed) Your tips are welcome.

haha, natural window light, reflected into a room with lights switched off, using a mirror on the cupboard.
Were you talking of hair gels?

I'll let you know. Would you be interested in doing a portfolio for a friend? (A girl, so don't get ideas about me now) :P.

Coming to shooting kids, what I generally practice is to keep the camera in continuous shoot mode. So, I move in and out usually around the minimum focusing distance and keep the button half pressed. As soon as I get the focus confirmation, I shoot frames continuously and I end up getting a series of in-focus shots with different expressions. I tend to use f4, as that gives me enough DOF with the 50mm. You might be able to get enough DOF even with f2.8 because it's a 35mm. Give it a shot.

Thanks for the invitation, I will try to find some birds around my place than spoiling your portfolio . But I am interested in people above 50, let me know when you do something of that sort. Your tips confirmed my thought process about the same. Will test it out next time.
