And it is mainly a function of aperture for a given focal length.

This is just a macro series to demonstrate the effect of aperture on DOF.

These three snaps are taken at same light within seconds of each of other.

F/2.8 at 1/500


F/8 at 1/60 (close aperture by 3 stops and decrease shutter speed by 3 stops - same exposure, but more DOF)


F/16 at 1/15 (close aperture by 2 stops and decrease shutter speed by 2 stops - same exposure, but more DOF)


You either suffer the effect of shallow DOF or use it creatively to compose your image.
