I know what a macro shot is.I'm just asking for some tips on how to take macro shots. For example here is one pic I took today. And by macro shot I meant shots taken with kit lens.

Is there anyway to take better pics without buying a macro lens? And this was with manual focusing.

Any tips??

@ punterccrx8s: Yep, you can. But not with the same clarity as that of a dedicated macro lens.

There are lens expensive stuff like close up lenses, raynox kits and all. With only 'macro' mode, all you get is close focussing distances. You need not 'buy' a macro lens as well. There are techniques like reversing lenses which would also give you good results.

One from my side with a cheap close-up lens + point and shoot cam.

Kit lens (mostly that 18-55mm) won't help you take real macro shots unless you reverse-mount it, or use a macro adapter like Raynox dcr250 in the front.

According to the gurus here, macro shots are of the difficult type when it comes to composition. With the magnification one will work with, chances are that composition will be ignored or sidelined - so a tip is to pay attention to the composition more than you normally would..

Lovely portrait TG. How do you create this feel? WB shift?

Was at Lepakshi with a flickr group and tried my first HDR (think, the stop differences was about 1). The DR didn't require a HDR, but I had bracketed the shots, so thought of trying it out. Used a friend's tokina 11-16 for this and I am impressed with this lens, sharp, very sharp. Funny thing was, I am so used to primes, instead of zooming in I was moving around to get the composition I had in mind. Here it is, more to come as I process them.

@Hellwrath
I did the white balance shift in post using Adobe lightroom 3. But more than that, the lighting has a lot to do with creating mood and feel.

Few more from the same shoot.

Kerala is an excellent place to learn macro!
I am yet to find that golden coated dragon fly in bangalore. I think I need to visit Kerala with only photoshoot in mind, not visiting relatives !

Thats a lovely, dreamy shot. Is it your first HDR here ? I have heard a lot of good reviews on the tokina 11-16, a worth buy if landscape gets serious consideration. How did you travel by the way ? No wonder I couldn't reach you over the weekend.

Here is a wild flower I had never seen before. Its only half inch in size, shot at 1:1 macro, f/32.

Where were the roses shot? Thanks, umm, it's my first proper HDR ever . Yep, the tokina is an awesome performer. Went to Hindupur by train and then took a matador to lepakshi. Total cost to reach Lepakshi was 16+6=22 bucks per head. I went there on Sunday, and when you called me on saturday I was at the exhibition, but didn't hear any response from your side. I cut the call and dialled back but the result was same, so I thought one of your cute kids were messing around with the phone .

I like that flower shot, very nice and sharp. Tripod mounted? I don't think f/32 was necessary here. Though, I can't be sure about it unless I see it in real life.

Its GKVK deep inside where the dense jungle starts. I wanted to enter the jungle, but was not confident alone ! Camera was always mounted on the tripod, it was impossible to shoot 1:1 macro without it. About the last flower, I tried f/4.8, f/9 and 2 more values upto f/32. Although the flower is just half inch in size, the petals were not clear on larger apertures (smaller numbers).

OT: Phone calls, I didnt get anything from your number on Saturday, and I strictly dont allow kids to touch my phone, forget kids, I dont even allow my wife or mum to attend a call on my phone, because I fear their earrings will spoil my touchscreen !
