Awesome pics! Bay area is the place to be if you love photography. Within 1000 miles, you have beaches, deserts, green forests, redwoods, Las Vegas(it has a category of its own ), snow capped mountains and what not. Enjoy!

First pic in my life in which I was able to isolate my subject from the background.

Heres a crop of the same. No post processing done, it was shot in jpeg only. I have not yet started shooting RAW.



Camera settings: 50mm (Olympus 12-50 kit lens), 1/160, f6.3, ISO 200

Critique invited. I am pretty happy with myself though for this mini achievement

I feel the image is a bit soft, need more DOF. Composition is very good.

Composition is missing. Feels like the image is bit OOF. When you shoot something with blurred background, the foreground subject should be sharp.

as far as I can see, it's backlit (light behind the subject). It can work wonders if you intentionally wanted it, else it's a disaster.

And as Samurai said, there has to be something of interest in focus.

This image is more sharper than the one uploaded here (It is the same image). The Raynox has an extremely shallow DOF. Getting used to it.
Also, learning how to pick up the right roses for future shots!

But yes, like you said, the edges of the petals should have been sharper, isn't it?

Yes, but the new one is much better. I can see some sharper elements, but I see you are working with very shallow DOF.

When you work with very shallow DOF, you have to be very careful about what you want in focus. It depends on your composition skills. Some examples of shallow DOF from my collection: http://samurai.smugmug.com/Photograp...775210&k=zVCRe

Thanks for the points. I think I get what you guys are saying. Basically these are the problems:
1. focus issue. I guess there is a focus ring on the lens i need to play with?
2. There is no particular object of interest in the image. Actually the whole image was that of a Tulsi pot on the balcony's parapet. I took a crop of the leaves (as whole pic is quite big at about 8MB).
3. Lighting issue. Background is more lighted than the subject (which was true as it was bright sunny outside but the pot was in shade). Any pointers as to how to take pics of such subjects (where there is more light in the background than on the subject)

Will work more on this pot and see if I can get better pics

I tried a macro shot today. The object was the eye of a toy fish. I intentionally kept another fish behind it about 50-60cms.
Camera settings: Macro mode on 12-50 lens, 1/40, f6.3, ISO 800, IS Off




Tried taking picture of a flying helicopter with the 12-50. it was a disaster
