Re: The Official non-auto Image thread

Hello BHPians,

Been away from the forum for a while, was busy soul searching I started working on figuring out means of lighting to get a natural look using my flash units. I am not a big fan of the typical flashed portrait look.

So here are a few shots from a recent portrait shoot where I used some lighting equipment to create the look I wanted. I used a D800 & an 85mm f 1.8 lens for all the shots.

The lighting for the first 2 shots was done by using one SB910 flash unit mounted on a light stand behind the subject's shoulder, on her left side, to back-light the hair and a silver reflector in front of her on the left side of her face, to bounce the light back on the face. I also placed a white reflector close to her face, diagonally facing the chin to open up the eye shadow region of her face.

The 3rd shot is all in natural light. All images were processed using Adobe Lightroom 5.2. I wanted a very analogue, film look, so used my scans from my medium format film camera for reference, while processing these shots. Hence finally overlayed a subtle layer of dust and scratches in Adobe Photoshop to mimic film look I was after.

Very interesting effect... it did remind me of my film days.

This is from the last film roll I shot in 2006. My son when he was 5.

Very nice - he looks like you. Shot around mid-day? The sunlight seems to be coming from top+behind.

@ Torqueguru: nice portraits. I don't understand much about portraits on film. Is there increasing demand for the old film type look, especially for print? Or were you just playing around?

That was the advantage of film, it has much higher tolerance to overexposure. A dSLR would have underexposed his face. Here it came alright.

Thanks.
Mounted my 50mm prime on to an extension tube and shot under natural light.
PP=Increased the exposure, cropped, adjusted the highlights+shadows and sharpened a bit on LR.
