I am sure you know how to take care of the equipment. I was wondering if you had any tricks of the trade to share.

No tricks, don't shoot at the sun generally between 10AM to 4PM.

Here is a Passport Photo:

TSK, this is a nice exposure. Its got a fairy tale-ish feel to it thanks to the calm waters and a slightly orange-ish (Whats with my 'ish's today?) horizon.
You should have tried HDR in this. Would have turned out unbelievably terrific.
Is there a way the lens flare in the bottom portion could have been avoided. I guess not. Unless we get it out in PP somehow. What do you think?

Happened due to smaller aperture (high in terms of number).

Rudra is right, I made the aperture small. Lens flare is unavoidable on the kit lens in such shots.

My dear, lens flare will happen any which way. I don't think it has anything to do with kit lens or not.

I heard that multi coated L lenses are more resistant to lens flare etc.,

You heard it right but in a situation like that, you'll see almost no difference. Multi coating is there to minimize internal reflections (flare).

This is on my first day 19th Mar 2007 that I took out my 400D. This shot almost burnt my right eye in 2 to 3 secs(thats why its not focused and out of center). I suffered 2 days with out proper vision. It was 6:52Am I was excited to click my first Solar Eclipse and that too with my newly found love :P. I was luck enough to get out of it safely. This was Just morning sun I cant imagin what it wud have been had it been full and around a hour later.
