My FInLaw shared with me ingenious idea to check if remote's batteries are ok, if the remote's IR sensor is working OK.

Switch on your cell phone's camera - focus it on the cameras lens and press any button. The camera will capture a IR Ray that the normal human eye cannot see... pretty easy way to avoid tapping the remote on ur other fist to make it work :)

Hope this simple idea helps sometime in your lives...

Been using this technique for a long time. Never occurred to share it though.
Discovered it when I was filming the new Plasma TV in my house and noticed an eerie glow when my father was operating the Remote Control.

Thanks a lot for sharing the tip with us! :thumbs up

I humbly request you to rename your Youtube thread title so that your video can be found easily by searching.

Just my two cents.

For years before cell phones, we were able to check remote controls by tuning FM radios till you heard a buzzing/chirping everytime you pressed the remote.

Try it. Take an FM radio and keeping any remote pressed tune the thing till you hear a chirping. You will find that the sound comes anytime you press any button.

I used this to explain various types of lights in spectrum to my son. it's on my youtube channel as well.

So what if he is just 5 yr old, he started it :D

An easier way instead of photograph is your webcam.

This is quite an old trick. However, I always wonder, why not point your remote at the device it was intended for. If the target device is not available, then does it matter whether it works or not :) ?

this way you would know whether to fix remote or the device :)

I did not know this.
Though all my remotes have illuminating leds now, but this seems like a much more fun way of checking!
:)

Pretty cool trick...

can see it in the viewfinder on my phones camera :) . Thanks
