Re: The DSLR Thread

I would also suggest that you get the Nikon D3300 with its 18-55 kit lense. It is quite ahead of both Pentax and Sony in IQ, High ISO and battery life, apart from being extremely light.

Do not get any lenses except the kit now. Use the camera, get used to its feel, and then decide whether you like it. If so, then think of a lense. Just keep in mind that inexpensive zoom lenses are quite bad at the long end both in IQ and aperture. Beyond 135mm think of getting primes at a later date, as the professional zooms which are fast and have good IQ are extremely expensive.

(Without getting into AF, RAM etc.) The extra controls make a big difference as one moves up the learning curve. Especially for fast shooting.

One of the things that it impacts is bit-depth of RAW files (12 bit vs 14 since D3300 cant process these fast enough)
I would recommend the D5200, since the prices are so close.

The other Nikon advantage is the dynamic range. And as you implied, Nikon also does a good job of pulling up shadows without too much noise.

Photos like these are easy to take when shooting RAW.

Shot last week, while camping in Nubra Valley, Ladakh.

Re: The DSLR Thread

Recently purchased Nikon D5100 with 18-55 VR lens.
Before purchasing a zoom lens gave a try with my friend's Nikon 55-300 VR lens and found most of my usage is limited around 200mm.

Now I'm confused which one should I go for (with a budget of around 10k)
- Nikon 55-200 VR
- Tamron 18-200
- Nikon / Tamron / Sigma 70-300

Out of these 3 Nikon 55-200 comes with VR and many positive reviews.

With Tamron 18-200 we have the advantage of carrying only one lens. Users / experts please comment on the image quality of Tamron 18-200 (I came across many reviews recommending Nikon over Tamron)

I couldn't afford a 55-300 right now, should I go for 70-300? That too a entry level lens without VR?

I'm new to the world of SLRs, please suggest me.

The site doesnt list Nikon as a compatible camera.

SanDisk SDXC 64 GB Class 10

Thanks!

Please check the Nikon page for the camera model. The 64 GB Sandisk SDXC is one of the approved memory cards for the D5300.

Unless you shoot plenty of videos, it is recommended to buy multiple cards of 8 or 16GB. If the memory card develops a problem, you lose all your snaps. Its better to buy several smaller capacity yet faster cards than one big capacity slower card. The Sandisk 64 GB has an advertised data read speed of 30 MB/s. There are faster cards available in the market.

Re: The DSLR Thread

Got a sweet deal on a bag at Flipkart. Its presently at 47% off and is a huge bag indeed.

http://www.flipkart.com/lowepro-nova...CX3SHGWHX8BJH&

Can hold the 5d2, a large flash, two lenses, multiple accessories (diffuser, remotes etc) and have a good amount of space to spare.

Is an allweather model, with rain cover built in.

Members may consider.

No, the D3300 is NOT better than the Pentax and Sony. The Pentax uses the older 16Mpx sensor, while the D3300 has the newer 24Mpx sensor. Use the compare features at DPReview and see.
Also - the K-50 has full weather-sealing, dual-control dials (only in the D7100 and up..), and a 100% Pentaprism viewfinder. Faster frame rate.

In fact, it goes up well against the D5300, leave alone the D3300.
Oh, and in-body SR, no need for expensive VR lenses.

Thanks much for sharing your views. Really appreciate it. Practical advise. I am going for a 16 gb. One that is sold by WS Retail. Though it is priced higher than other sellers.

I envy! I recently bought the below and the one you have highlighted wasn't on sale then. I am now in a quandry whether I should buy this one too. Reason being: this is handy and practical as against the one I bought. My brain says don't spend too much money but the heart is saying go ahead and buy the one I feel is a decent value add buy.

The one I bought:
