12fps sounds great.. Eagerly waiting. Any rumours about price?

Re: The DSLR Thread

Had sold my trusted Nikon D810 along with my quality FX gear. Didn't have time to do justice. Now that I started getting some spare time, the itch to get out grew in me again. Bought home a brand new D500 as its going to be birding mostly that I would want to do. The 16-80 2.8-4.0 + 200-500 5.6 + 85 1.4.
Spend some quality time with the D500 + 200-500, hence thought of sharing my experience.
  • The initial AF acquisition is instantaneous, my D810 used to be sluggish here
  • The general tracking of flying birds was excellent, so was my D810. But D500 retains the AF even on fast incoming birds as well, which my D810 couldn't most of the times.
  • The 10FPS is fun, especially when almost all of them turns out to be in focus. In this area the D810 is quite slow
  • D500 is built to last, very close to D810 here
Having said all these, what D810 is in a league of its own is the Image quality. The files from my D810 were fun to work at post. Early days though with the DX monster !

Re: The DSLR Thread

Photography Gurus! Need a suggestion.

A likely new venture would need a lot of digital marketing with Landscape/Nature/Building Photographs being a major part of it.

Being a Canon fan, I tried with a rented 70D with a 24-105mm and 50mm prime but was not impressed with the results.

Now looking at a full frame option and 5D mark 3 or 4 seems a good buy as have some very good experience with Mk2.

Question: Since budget is a constraint, is it wise to look at used equipment? Apart from shutter count, what else to look for in a used body? Do lenses also wear apart from physical damage to optics?

Thanks in advance!

Re: The DSLR Thread

A few shots from Arunachal and Assam. Had carried a 24-70 f/2.8, used it extensively. And my usual wildlife lens too. The new D9 AF mode of Nikon (different from the old D9 mode) works rather well.

Thanks Thad.

Shot quite a few abstract ones. Some folks asked me whether my hands have started shaking because for them a non sharp photo means something was wrong :-)

And a sharp photo for a change (somewhat cropped). Always look up in a less explored rainforest. Even if leeches are getting extremely hospitable and friendly around your feet.

Absolutely amazing. This is beyond beautiful. Could I get a full size RAW version to use as a wallpaper?

Re: The DSLR Thread

I think quite a few people might like that on their screens. But most of us would be better off with a full-size JPEG. I, for one, am yet to acquire more than the most very-basic skills in raw processing.

Also, the composition is locked in to the JPEG.

Many folks buy my photos. Not fair to them to give away high res files just like that. Besides, a photographer almost never shares the RAW file

Aha, trade secrets! Shutter speed was 1/2s.

I cropped it like that because someone wanted that kind of an aspect ratio for a print. There is a little crop from top and bottom, none from left or right.

Re processing: many times one takes a shot keeping the end result in mind. End result means end photo after processing the RAW file. Very subjective and relative. Eye of the beholder and all that.

A couple of monochromes from Assam forests

Thank you, Nilanjanray! I would keep that in mind next time when I see a flock of birds and see how the results turn up.

Re: The DSLR Thread

There is a series of instructional videos about bird photography on Canon's site. One of them talks about blur. Nilanjanray takes it to a whole other place, let alone level.
