Re: The DSLR Thread

Rumours are working full time about the 7D Mark-II announcements in Sep. Canon may announce it in Photokina to be held in Sep at Cologne. (16-21 Sep; A premier imagining event that happens once in 2 years )

There has been lots of expectations from this product. Canon has for a long time neglected the APSC product line. Most of its enhancements here have been on the video front. This time the expectation is they may bring in their 1D-X sensor and AF system redesigned for APSC and hence provide the much needed enhancement in terms of optics.

I have bought stuff online from them. They are pretty professional. I think in store prices may be lower than online listed prices.

How much would I lose with D3300 in terms of IQ compared to D5200 (or would I regret getting the D3300 compared to D5200 2 years down the line?)
I had chance to do some further research and need help choosing between D5200 and D3300.

There is an independence day sale at Flipkart with 10% cashback for SBI cards and I would like to buy in the next 2-3 days.

Price:
D3300: Rs. 30,360 + 10% cashback
D5200: Rs. 34,360 + 10% cashback

D3300 Advantages:
Smaller kit lens, Lighter body
Better battery (700 shots vs 500 of D5200)
Newer processor & sensor
No LPOF
Better kit lens
1080p video (vs 1080i in D5200) - Doesn't mean much to me
Cheaper by 4k
Better low ISO performance

D5200 Advantages:
More Autofocus points
In built HDR and bracketing
Flip out screen
Some sites claim that it is a better camera overall (D5200 is mid range vs D3300 being entry level)

1. Would it make sense to buy the D3300 as my first DSLR and save the difference to buy a 35mm f1.8 lens later? Or should I go for D5200 as it has a "better body" and a better investment in the long term

2. Also, is it ok to buy from Flipkart (WS Retail) as there is a notification on Nikon's site that warranty may not valid? I am not seeing better prices from other reliable sellers

Pardon my ignorance, whats LPOF?
Any time of the day, with any level of experience, a higher spec body is always better than lower spec body.

Analogy- If you started to learn driving on a Tata Ace, you will not become a better driver than the one's who learnt driving on a Merc. Obviously Tata Ace will have to be sold as scrap someday, but if u have merc as first car then you will retain it for longer.

Take no easy, 39 versus 11 AF points is a HUGE difference especially when you are shooting moving subjects.

So I would recommend u go for D5200, if you have budget then go for even higher spec. Remember higher spec camera age slower. My D300 served me nice for 4 years without any issue, and even today the new owner is happy about it.
D300s(D300 plus some glamour) is still in production. D300 was launched in 2007 IIRC.

D3300 has inbuilt two shot HDR which works most of the time. Get the D3300 if you cannot afford D5300. D5200 is not that great. For a bare bones DSLR nothing can beat D3300 - price, weight, sensor, battery.

I have bought both from Flipkart (35mm F1.8 DX Lense) and Snapdeal (D3300 Camera). They are front end for a lot of stores. The bill I got for camera was for a Varanasi authorised retailer and the lense from another distant shop. The products come with Nikon India warranty and a bill. I registered both the products on Nikon site.

I would suggest that you keep monitoring three sites - Flipkart, Snapdeal and Amazon. The lowest I have seen for D3300 kit is Rs29,000/ a few days back.

I think 5200 would be a better buy.

D3300 has removed quite a few things to keep cost down such as articulated screen, info overlays on viewfinder, and has slower CPU + lesser RAM. E.g. Camera would get sluggish if you keep ~200 raw files on card.

D3300 does have a better sensor though.

I bought my Camera + lenses from Flipkart and did not have any issues while registering with Nikon.

If camera would have been available in local stores in similar cost (say just 1k more) I might have bought from local stores.

.D3300 and D5300 have the same processor which is much faster than D5200. If you have to compare features compare the D3300, D5300 and D7100, not the previous generation D3200, D5200, D7000.
. My D3300 has never been sluggish, at times I have more than 400 RAW images in the card.
For a no frill DSLR D3300 is the best buy you can make. D5xxx series offer a few more gizmos but nothing that you can not do without. It is D7100 which is the camera to buy as it has professional build, 2xcard slots, motor and a host of other features.

An acquaintance in Pune has negotiated a deal of Rs.28K for the D3300 kit with a shop.

Re: The DSLR Thread

I feel D3300 vs D5200 is like comparing Celerio with Ritz. Of course Celerio is newer, but ritz is one step up, even though based on older platform. D5300 will be new Swift based on whole new platform.

I usually skip the entry-phase for retail purchase. See the D3300 and D5200 in hand and check which makes you more comfortable. I have a D5200 and love it. The articulated screen comes in handy in two ways. One, I can click photos at obscure angles without dirtying my clothes or stretching my body in unnatural positions. Two, while storing or clicking in rushed environments, I can fold away the screen and not worry about it at all.

BTW D3300 is about 28k at amazon, and D5200 is at 33.5-34k. The price difference should tell you something. Remember you can't close this incremental gap in future by paying the difference later.

LPOF - Low Pass optical filter. Removal of this is supposed to improve details in photos - the down side is moire effect

Thanks for your suggestions, but I think this has added to my confusion a bit more

I am inclined to go with D3300 and save a few bucks. Anything major that I would miss if I go with D3300?

Being a first time DSLR purchase all these choices are very confusing.

D5200 has 4 GB RAM and Toshiba TX09 series CPU (TMP19A44F)
D3300 has 2 GB RAM and Toshiba TX03 series CPU

One of the things that it impacts is bit-depth of RAW files (12 bit vs 14 since D3300 cant process these fast enough)

D3300 uses parts from older generation to save cost. It does have Expeed 4 made by Fujitsu, but lacks power to make full use of it.

D3300 is a fine camera to begin with. If you continue on photography as a hobby, it might be limiting in terms of Autofocus and extracting full information in post processing.

Thanks everyone your suggestions have been quite helpful. Will be purchasing the D3300 shortly (budget being a primary consideration) and will share my first experiences.

Re: The Digital Camera Thread: Questions, discussions, etc.

Folks - A quick q for all of you dslr geeks out there
I am looking to pick up a dslr - entry level for now to reignite my photography days. The last camera i used was a film camera and now that i find it difficult to procure films i do have to migrate to a dslr. I have shortlisted 2 models Pentax K30 and Sony SLT58. I dont want to jump into the Nikon/Canon bandwagon as somehow i feel these cameras have high noise levels + the viewfinder provides only 95% view for composing. I am used to seeing what to capture clearly.
Pentax - k30 seems to be my first choice for now. But then i might be wrong since i might not be looking at the right parameters.
Heart says Pentax, logic says Sony.
What would you guys recommend. I would love to get some thoughts today as i am planning an evening shopping session. Both come around the 40k mark with 18-55 and 55-200 lens.
Let me know quickly

SLT58 is not a traditional DSLR, it has a electronic viewfinder that works differently from SLRs. Instead of a mirror + prism it has a LED display for viewfinder.

If viewfinder is important to you, DSLR might be a better fit.

Have a look at noise comparison at :

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/pentax-k-30/12

Nikon is the leader in low-noise performance at the moment. Top of the line cameras can shoot in dark environments as well. Even entry level camera like D3300 (costs ~30k) would outperform both Pentax K30 and Sony SLT58 in terms of Noise.

One major advantage of Canon/Nikon is cost of accessories. Due to high volume, you can get lenses/ flashes/ remotes/ batteries at reasonable cost.
