Satish, if you are applying for BSNL unlimited packages kindly stay away from them. They have pathetic upload speeds and a even worse customer care.

Airtel is the best by far, followed by Tata Indicom.

Buddy does airtel have a 512kbps unlimited? Last time I asked them they said nothing more than 256kbps unlimited available.
MY 256kbps becomes 512 in the night.

I always benchmark using speedtest when I am in the US but for some reason I cannot connect to the Lahore / Karachi, etc. server from India. Considering I am in eastern India; if I go further for a ping test, then that is not accurate as well.

Anyway - I like BSNL in jamshedpur and will get the same in my Gurgaon apt. if available unless someone recommends something else. Thx.

Vcash - Best option is Airtel, good speeds, decent plans & good customer care & support. Tata Indicom is good (I had a 512kbps dedicated line with them 2 years back) but I suffered a lot due to my specific connection having some problems which took around a month or so to resolve. Till then uptime was around 30%.

Afterwards though, it was perfect & didn't miss a beat. Ask them if they'll give you an uptime guarantee (in writing), if yes then go for it by all means.

Finally!

Getting 10.7 Mbps downstream, on the new Airtel 8Mbps home plan. Life is so much better now. That of course is to the Airtel speed test server, here - Bharti Airtel Ltd - Bandwidth Meter. Upstream is around 1Mbps.

To the US it is much lower, around 2.5Mbps consistent. Airtel is new at this, I believe that the speeds to US will also improve over time.

Just wanted to update this thread even though its been dormant for a while.

Tested Speed - 1,740kb/s download & 200kb/s upload (on Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test)
Ping to test server - 210ms
ISP - MTNL ASDL
ISP's Connection Speed - 2mbps plan, 4GB limit, Rs2399/mo (kindof expensive!)
Location - Bombay

So far i'm really pleased with the speed and very low latency, zero downtime (though MSN and AIM get disconnected and reconnected within a few seconds every 6hrs or so). Really enjoying the new internet, but the only complaint is that the MTNL pricing is very high in comparison to others offering similar real-world speeds (airtel etc - which werent available in my area).

May be OT, but don't you guys feel that with the amount being charged by our ISP people and the type of speeds and service we get, ain't we taken for ride?

The charges in Singapore for an unlimited downloads and 8 MBps connection is about SGD 60/- (about Rs 1800). And you get a telephone connection with no rental and all local calls free.

It is worth noting that Singapore has higher cost of living and more expensive and, population to recover the cost is much less as compared to India. Also, I think backbone charges will be same as it is governed by international factors.

It is also worth to note how the govt. of India took us for a ride for so many years with telephone charges.
