I have an Airtel 3g dongle. I have used it in Bombay, Bangalore and Delhi. I get 2 mbps in my home & at a few other places. However, there are so many places where I don't get 3g at all & end up with really slow 2g. I have been using this for 8-9 months, I think. I have fixed line at home, so I don't use the dongle at home. Mainly this only for when I am out of home & office & also when I am travelling outside Bombay. For these purposes, this has proved near to useless. I am planning to switch back to Reliance CDMA, which I used happily for many years before this.
Can we use the USB dongles(eg. Huawei) what we get in India, in USA? I mean, are there service providers and is the MHz/band similar?
I would like to use it for a short trip out there. If else, are there any alternatives?
Please advise.
Facing a strange problem with my new Airtel 4G data card.
While working remotely I used to connect to my office network through VPN. This used to work perfectly earlier with Photon+.
But with Airtel 4G, although the VPN Network Client connects without any issue, I am still unable to access the office network !
I have an Airtel 3G USB dongle,
The speeds and stability are pathetic. This is in Bangalore JP Nagar area.
Would not advice anyone to go for this one.
Dear All,
please help. I am in need of a usb data card (my location is not under wired broadband service area of any provider) in Kolkata. I stay in North near Dunlop/ Dakshineswar.
Please suggest which one would be good in terms of service and network. Tata Photon or REliance Netconnect or MTS.
Waiting for your response.
Br,
Abhishek //M
Looks like there are not many TBHP users who use wireless Internet.
I have been exploring the option of wireless Internet providers since I do not have any good (read reliable and cheap) wired alternatives (today Tata guy said he can provide - after hearing 'not feasible' from three people there).
So, I have an unlocked EC315 (Tata Photon Max with WiFi) and I am using a Reliance CDMA prepaid SIM.
Reliance network is poor and I am now looking for an antenna to be kept on the terrace.
anyone using MTS data cards? how is the service and speeds?
I had been using BSNL broadband for quite some time now. It used to give me service (pathetic would be an understatement). Lately, since last couple of months, it was not working. Finally my patience gave way yesterday and I took a Reliance 3G connection. Its working like a charm but I'm facing an issue. I had an iBall dongle and started using it. Problem is that it works perfectly with Windows7 but doesn't work with Windows8. I concur its due to incompatibility of the dongle with Windows8. So I need to change my dongle. I would like to buy a Wifi dongle which would be used as a wifi connection at home. How can it be done?

Why not try one of the portables like this:
Huawei E5151 3G Data Card?
Compact size, gives you multi-device connectivity and the flexibility to carry it around when traveling too (has a decently sized inbuilt battery), instead of relying on destinations to provide you connectivity.
Airtel 4G seems promising with the increasingly better coverage!
I am thinking of getting a vodafone Wifi Dongle - they have K5300 which costs around 2000 Rs. However, I am assuming this would be locked to Vodafone. Are there any generic Huawei or any other non-telco branded wifi dongles which can be used with a Vodafone SIM card - anyone have any recommendations?

I ended up buying it after posting the question here. I get around 0.6 Mbps. That's why I am looking for something else now. And hence the next question about Vodafone.
^ You need to look for unlocked GSM dongles for Vodafone. Some come with inbuilt battery, else use your existing power bank while on the move.
The speed generally depends on the number of people using it in that area and also on the signal strength and quality.
Just remember that we are soon getting new 4G options and hence it makes sense to look at dongles which support those bands. No one will be interested in the existing models. So, hang on for 6 months if you can. :)
Edit: I noticed that you are in Mumbai. I have used Reliance CDMA on Huawei EC315/ Tata Photon+ unlocked and it works very well with speeds between 1 and 3 Mbps.
