I have tried moneydance and couple of other tools before sticking with Acemoney -- it's a light weight application with a free and paid version. It's perfect for personal finance and I've been using for the last few years.

Money is the way to go! Statements of banks with good online system can be directly imported into Money.

Basically its a perfect end user application, nothing professionally advanced about it.

gnu cash is good as well... it consolidates everything and is available in a portable usb stick avatar (helps when the computer crashes and you end up losing everything).

its available from portableapps.com
gnucash portable.

Expense Organizer

The Expense Organizer
I have designed this so that we have a easy and fast method to note down all the monthly expenses (even daily expenses too). Then the sheet automatically does all the necessary calculations for you and even draws some nice graphs. You will never have to bother keeping track of your expenses here after.

Link to Download
Expense_Organizer_Ver3.0.xls

File Type/Size
Easy to Use Excel Sheet of 215 KB

Suggestions on using the Expense Organizer
1. There are 15 sheets in the Excel file.
2. 12 Sheets are present for the 12 months and are labelled as 'Jan', 'Feb', 'Mar' etc for you.
3. The first sheet is for Settings where user can define the names of various expense and income heads. The last 2 sheets are the Graphs and Reports Sheets. You need not enter anything there. It will automatically generate all the reports and graphs.
4. Entering data is child's play. It is very very easy. Even those who are not aware of 'Excel' can do it. I have tried my best to make it very user friendly.
5. Many have have come up asking for passwords. Please note that the protection done on the sheets is for users not to accidentally disturb the data. There is no password for the protection.

Screenshots of the Expense Organizer
1. The first sheet is the 'Settings Page' where you can set the fields of income, expense and investments per month. You can also choose currency (Rs, $ etc) and plan you monthly budge here

2. The 12 sheets for the 12 months look the same. (like the one below for Jan).

3. There are two sheets at the end "Reports" and "Charts" that give you a summary of the Income / Expense / Investments for the whole year. (Check out the chart sheet below)

I have been using a similar setup for my tracking purposes, till i became lazy and then it didnt work out. Ofcourse, i used a different format, and didnt involve too many charts and graphs, just one.

ah! Microsoft decided to discontinue Money!! sad! Intuit has now reduced the prices for its quicken and waiting to hog on all money customers. However, money will be pulling bank transactions untill 2011 and you can continue adding transactions mannually after that, but I felt it was a good option available to compare with other personal accounting softwares in the market.
