Make sure that every update for the PS3 is downloaded from the country specific website. ie if you have bought a PS3 from the US, then use the usa website.

My friend bought a PS3 40gb from singapore, but updated it to 2.1 from the US website, he is now facing multiple problems with his PS3 (hanging, not reading certain BD etc).

PS3 2.17update file. Download to usb, create a folder PS3 -> UPDATES-> PS3UPDAT.PUP and install through system update option in PS3
Thanks - but in my case I got it sorted out. Changed the authentication on my Wireless Router to 64 bit from 128 bit, with a much smaller password (obviously) and bingo it worked. My son now plays online, we got the 2.17 update and a 748 mb NFS ProStreet upgrade too. Also bought a game called Sky Diver from the PS Store - cost me $12 and its great fun.

hi guys i dont have the patience to go through this thread nor do i know much about the ps3 so if you can answer my questions i will be grateful. i intend on picking one up from australia in about 2 weeks time. does the 40gb or 80gb make sense? does the 80gb have any extra features over the 40gb?

another thing i had read somewhere was that the ps3 either plays at 1080p or standard definition. now i have a tv which is capable of 1080i so is the ps3 capable or playing at 720p or 1080i?

also the games can be bought from anywhere and arent region coded? is this the same for blue ray movies?

also any specific accessories i should buy? which is a good racing wheel? and which are the good racing games?

also when are gt5 and gta 4 releasing?

thanks alot guys. havent been able to keep in touch with all of this thanks to my studies.

80gb has more 4 usb ports while 40gb has 2. useful for connecting keyboard/mouse/etc or charging multiple controllers
Also 80 gb has sd/flash memory card slots

PS3 will check for the most optimum resolution on your tv and will work at anything from 480i to 1080p. I use 720p and at times 1080i on my sony bravia

games aren't region coded, but blu ray movies are

racing games - you can buy formula 1 and nfs. I am not sure abt gt4/5 but you can download some excellent full hd racing games/demos for free off the playstation store

Hope the ps3 doesn't affect your studies
still an excellent choice go for it

2K is a good price for dirt and even better for GT5. Did you buy in Dubai? If in India, where from?

you mean sony india or global - i am currently using a 40gb ps3 (bought in india) and have in the past used the 80gb ps3 (bought in US but got stolen in india).
The experience with both have been pretty similar - no differences in performance, cooling, hdmi video or optical audio, etc.
The drawbacks of 40 gb are as follows
1) 2 instead of 4 usb ports - i connected a cheap 4 port usb hub to counter this
2) smaller 40gb hdd - i have linux installed on my ps3 in 10gb partition and am no where close to maxing out on the remaining 30gb. Let me tell you, I have a 8mbps connection and download loads of game demos and movie promos of the playstation store. I do however have an external 500gb hard disk which I use for my primary data storage for anything i want to retain long term.
3) no memory/sd card slots - you can connect a cheap universal card reader to the usb port. i however have not yet felt the need to use sd cards on my ps3.

cheers,
j

You can also swap the internal hard disc and upgrade it to any size available.

yes you can swap the hdd with any 2.5" sata hdd - its a simple procedure and doesn't void your warranty. Sony has no problems with you upsizing your hdd or installing linux I personally know friends who are running a 320gb hdd inside their 40gb ps3!!

The 40gb does have WIFI built in, they have discontinued the 80gb model.

Maybe a 120gb PS3 is on the cards...
