Just bought a PS3 last week. Got a good deal: 40GB PS3 + GT5 + HDMI cable for 25k. One question about GT5 - has anyone faced an issue downloading the update? In my case, it downloads a bit and then says error.

Nevermind the last question on the GT5 update. I was able to download it last night. If anyone is interested in how, see pg. 9 of the GT5 thread:

No news. Sony doesn't even have a Diwali offer out like the Xbox 360. And with their home theaters they are giving HDMI cables free but not with the PS3. Plus there is a story in ET today that says with the rupee falling expect electronics to become more expensive. I think Sony will continue to flog the 40gb machine in India for as long as it can/has stocks.

yeah and fortunately or unfortunately i am the only bloke stuck with both the 80 and 40gb versions i've had to invent reasons on how having 2 helps!! - like watching US and other region coded blurays, etc

So on 2nd thoughts why don't you get the 40gb and then bump the hdd up to 320gb or so. Sony has no probs with you doing that and 2.5" sata hdds are available easily.

Does buying a PS3 in the grey market require something called a "mod chip" to run certain pirated games? Or its always advisable to buy only retail PS3 titles?

i haven't heard of anything like a mod chipped ps3. All titles are region free and available universally, unlike xbox360. Wheres the need to mod a ps3 then?? You can get an import from US or buy a 40gb ps3 from sony india, its all the same
And piracy - yes bluray games/movies can be ripped, but i would recommend we not talk about pirated content on this forum.
All PS3 games cost almost the same everywhere in the world, yes bluray movies are cheaper in US

Redrage, as Jassi said, all PS3 games are region free. Any game bought from any country will work on all PS3s. You only need to be mindful of one thing. Games sold in the US are formatted in NTSC, games from Asia are PAL. So although your PS3 will play them your TV has to be capable of switching between PAL and NTSC. Most new LCD TVs do that and will have no issues.
Blu-Ray movies are region coded. And an Indian PS3 will not play movies bought in the US (Region 5 vs 2, I think).
In my opinion, game consoles like PS3 and (definitely) the Xbox 360 - given its failure rate - should be bought legal with local warranty in case you end up getting a dud piece.

Bluray region coding has only 3 regions
A - US, singapore, etc
B - Europe, australia, etc
C - the piracy countries - china and us
