You might find India's Audio Video Home Theatre and Hi-Fi Discussion Forum useful for htpc/media-centre configs and discussions.

re: The Computer & Configuration Thread

Trust Indian and Chinese "Zugaad" to work out such kinks

Laptop batteries with OEM cells are not available for 800 -900 Rs. and USB powered ADSL modems work fine from laptop power.

Of course, my Dell Studio laptop that pulls 5 hours on battery, drops to 2 hours when used in a power cut, since it has to power modem + few other peripherals that normally run on AC.

One such modem:

Edimax AR-7025UmA - USB ADSL Modem Router

24Gb?

Not running Windows XP, then, I guess?

It's the heat sink that catches my eye. details would be interesting. Is it really sufficient with no fan of its own?

re: The Computer & Configuration Thread

Hi Geeks,
Please suggest me the right brands for the following:
1. AMD CPU 4 Cores:
2. Motherboard (Atleast 16GB RAM Support):
3. 1TB sATA HDD:

Am looking for a cheapest buy because this is only for my experimentation and dont like to invest much, hence AMD.

Cheers,
Rajesh

One obvious question, what's your budget like in figures?? Are you building this PC for gaming or general usage (what exactly you're planning to achieve)?

AMD itself a brand. I assume here you mean series. You have two basic series to choose from, Athelon II or Phenom II. Since you're building a new PC I'd recommend you to wait for a couple of months or so (if you can) as new generation of CPU is about to be launched.

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-890FXA-UD5.

HDD: Seagate 1TB.

Hi Punzabi,

15-18k Max (Including a decent TFT), This PC will mainly be used for testing (Virtualization). By AMD, I meant any series of AMD Procs and as mentioned, this is purely for experimental purpose. But yes I might upgrade this PC in the mext 5-6 mnths.

For my personal use I have 3 laptops serving me.

Cheers,
Rajesh

re: The Computer & Configuration Thread

If you can't wait for new line of processors and want to go ahead with your setup then estimated prices and models for gear are:

AMD Phenom II X6 1055T AUD $189

ASRock 870 Extreme3 Motherboard AUD $105

Seagate Barracuda 1TB ST31000528AS AUD $65
----------
AUD $359 (appx INR 15078) I have roughly estimated 1AUD$= INR 42

If your budget allows a bit more then you can get a bit more fancy stuff like Gigabyte motherboard I mentioned in my previous post. I am assuming you have case, RAM and PSU at hand already.

Hope this helps..

This budget is not realistic:

CPU Cost : approx 5k
Motherboard with 16 GB support : approx 8k
RAM (4 GB) : 4k
HDD : 3k
Case + PSU : 2k
TFT : 8k
Mouse/Keyboard : 1k

This would be in range of 30k

OT: It appears prices in India are a bit on higher side where as I was under the impression that it'd be cheaper. Just out of interest, what's indian price for Sandy Bridge i5 2400?? I bought it for AUD$207

Proccy : Best would be to get Athlon X3 440 [Triple core] or Athlon X4 635 [quad core] depending on your budget. Tremendous VFM.

Memory : Multiple brands you can go for. 4GB will work out to be around 3k or even less, unless you're interested in high-performance modules, which, I don't think you need, unless the other parts are high-end.

TheITWares - One Stop for all Gizmos!

HDD : Doesn't seem like you're looking for performance HDDs. So any Seagate [BUT NOT 7200.11 series], WD, Samsung, Hitachi etc. will do. If you are looking for high-performance storage, WD Caviar Black or Samsung Spinpoint F3 are the hard disks to buy. These will be a bit expensive, though.

PSU + Cabinet : 2k is too less. You can not compromise on the PSU. You'll have to spend about 3000 bucks on the PSU alone. Of course, you can compromise on the cabinet if the need be.

Motherboard : As there are too many choices in this sector, I'd say ask the dealer which models he has that meet your criteria, and then google for the model number to ensure that the model doesn't have any persistent problems.

re: The Computer & Configuration Thread

Yes these prices are approximates just to give an idea about overall prices.

Any any rate, a 4 core CPU PC with Mobo that support 16 GB RAM is not going to cost less than 25 - 30k.

re: The Computer & Configuration Thread

Processor, motherboard, and memory are your choices, but for some other stuff, my recommendations:
1. HDD: Seagate 500 GB 7200.12-approx Rs. 1800-2000. Specifically model ST3500418AS. If 1 TB is your flavour, go for ST...528AS. Caviar Blacks are expensive and exceed Rs. 5 K for 1 TB. As noted, do not get the 7200.11 series). Fortunately they are out, but you might get palmed off with this if you are too lazy. Very little chance though if you are buying from a decent shop. As of now, 7200.11 is perhaps only in 1.5 TB.
2. Case: Coolermaster Elite 3xx series with 390-400 W PSU-approx Rs. 3000. This should handle a decent but not too much amount of load with a lightweight GPU (Nvidia/Radeon). If you are not buying a GPU, 390-400W is sufficient for a PSU.
3. DVD writer-HP1260
