Hard to say. I say give it a shot with the Ryzen APU and if frame rates are not up to your requirements, put in a dedicated GPU.

I was looking at the ryzen 5 2600 and a x470 mobo but couple of guys told me to get the ryzen 5 3600 and a x570 mobo. Please bear in mind i am not into heavy gaming. My graphics card is a noob nvidia gt1030.

Would the ryzen 3400g with it's apu perform better than the gt1030?

Help
Get the Ryzen 3600 and a discrete card. This is a 3rd gen CPU which has major architectural improvements.

The 3400G is actually a second gen part with integrated graphics and not much faster than the 2400G that it replaces.

The third gen is roughly 20% faster in single core and 30-40% faster in multi core benchmarks. You don't need to buy an expensive X570 board unless you absolutely need PCIe 4.0 storage which also costs a bomb.

You are better off with a decent B450 board like the MSI B450 tomahawk or Asus B450 Prime or similar boards.

Thanks. I didn't know you could use the 3600 with a b450 mobo would a x470 be better than the b450?
And what mhz ram should i get. Keep reading about how the ryzens work better with faster rams.
@sandeep, checked out the creative ae-9? I think that would be my answer to a DAC

They're basically evenly matched in graphics performance. Here is a simple comparo: https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compar...83726vsm401440

Btw, using this site, you can run a benchmark test on your current PC, and then compare your desired build against it to see the gains

I second this opinion. If you're not into gaming, then just retain your GT 1030 and get a better CPU.

Cheers

Re: The Desktop Computer & Configuration Thread

Ok,
So it would be:
Ryzen 5 3600
Asus ROG Strix B450
Corsair Vengeance 3000MHz 2x8GB
Corsair Spec-Alpha Black/Silver Case
Corsair 650W SMPS

Using my current GT1030, Razer arctosa keyboard and logitech g502 mouse and the 27" curved sammy monitor

Might get the new creative AE-9 sometime later from the US of A. Hoping for a sale.

Speakers are the logitech thx 2.1 ones. Upgrade planned with polk rtia3 and an amp.

Corsair Cooling Hydro Series H50 - Liquid CPU cooler
2 x 1TB WD Blue HDD

Re: The Desktop Computer & Configuration Thread

So the list looks like this:

AMD Ryzen 5 3600 Processor
Asus ROG Strix B450-F Board
Corsair Vengeance 2*8GB 3000MHz RAM
WD 1TB 7200 HDD
Samsung 120GB SSD
Nvidia GT1030 2GB DDR5 Graphics
Corsair VS650 PSU [White certified]
Samsung 27" Curved monitor
Razer Arctosa keyboard
Logitech g502 mouse
Corsair Spec Alpha Case [Black/Silver]

Two questions:
Bit confused with the exact RAM module i need to buy. The latency spec and something about the model series ending with even or odd number?

Might get the Creative AE-9 soundcard in the future and it requires a bronze/gold psu. For the spec listed, do i need 650W?

Thanks

Re: The Desktop Computer & Configuration Thread

As an Asus X370 board owner, I must warn you that right now 3rd gen support on asus boards is screwed up with high voltages and what not. Since you are buying new, extend to the x570 or buy a gigabyte b450 which seems to have their bios issues sorted out properly. Make sure that the board's bios is updated to the latest before putting the 3600 or else it won't get detected.

Thanks for the warning. The x570 boards seem to a bit ahead for me. As it is i am stretching myself with this build going for the 3600

Would this be a good one?

Desktop not taking 8GB RAM

I have a 10+ year old assembled PC which was lying un-used for a few years. I wanted to upgrade the RAM and the OS with a decent graphics card for occasional gaming. It already had a 4GB RAM DDR2(Transcend make). So i purchased another 4GB RAM DDR2(Kingston make).

Now the problem is that the Windows 10 does not boot in if i put all 4 RAM sticks,ie, 8GB. It gets stuck in the Blue Windows logo stage. HDD activity light will be inactive. However, if i put in 6GB by removing any one of the RAM sticks, does not matter Transcend or Kingston, the OS boots up and everything works fine.

The RAM timing is different for Transcend and Kingston as checked in the BIOS. The BIOS detects the RAM modules correctly. The PC config is

Intel Core2Quad Q9300
DG35EC Mobo
Cooler Master 450W power supply

Any suggestions on how i can get the OS to load up with 8GB RAM?

In general, it is not advisable to use different sticks of RAM from different manufacturers in the same build.

However, since the PC is booting when using 3 of the sticks, then I suggest you try running a MemTest86 on them, and then repeat the test with one of the sticks replaced with the one that missed the first test, to see if any of the RAM sticks are faulty.
If the memory tests don't produce any errors, then I would suggest trying all of the RAM sticks in another motherboard, but I'm fairly sure that is not possible for you, so I would say that your last options would be:
  1. Buy new RAM with all the sticks from the same manufacturer, and preferably the same timings
  2. Take a gamble and buy a new motherboard
  3. Live with 6GB of RAM
  4. Buy a new PC

Let us know what happens.

Cheers

Yes, you are right. However, the PC is 10+ years old and i could not get the Transcend ram with same ram timings as the one on the PC. Hence had to get 2 kingston sticks.
Like i mentioned , i tried all the combinations of the old and new ram sticks. But the windows 10 just does not boot with 8GB or all 4 slots filled up.

Unfortunately, i do not have an option of trying out all the RAM sticks on a different PC. I will anyway try the memtest once with all different combinations. If it does not work i will live with 6 gigs of RAM. No question of buying a new PC. LOL.

Will update once i run the tests. Thanks

As you say the PC will not boot with Win10, I suggest that you try to install Win7 64bit, or even XP 64. If it boots with either of the older versions, then your MB is not fully compatible with Win10, and you have to live with either Win10+6GB or older OS with 8GB.

I tried Win10 in my 10 year old Dual Xeon, but reverted back to WIn7 as the newer OS did not support my older 1200x1920 24" Monitors.

Ok. I may not do this since it would to too much hassle for me. Besides, the outcome would be the same irrespective of whether it will run with 8GB on Win7/XP 64Bit,ie, I will have to live with Win10 and 6GB since i do not prefer to go to Win7 after getting used to Win10
