just gathered some old rusting components as a weekend project and this is what's working now.

Celeron Tualatin core 1.0ghz overclocked to 1.4ghz @140mhz FSB
Intel 810 chipset
256mb DDR SD RAM (128X2 sticks exchanged with a friend for uncompatible 256X2)
LG CD-ROm
Samsung CD-rw
10gb seagate HDD
Ps2 to USb converted mouse
14" LG CRT monitor with slight sharpness and contrast problem.

GA-MA78GM-S2H (rev.1.0) with AMD Athlon 5600+ total costed me rs10200. 5600+ was not available in most of the shops that day and i think it increased the price bit more than expected.
2gb DDR2 800 ram rs 1100 each.
Due to the slim and congested spacing inside this cabinet had to run processor at 2.6Ghz and GPU at 500Mhz.open box under fan CPU was stable at 3.1Ghz and GPU 1.1Ghz.
Due to location of power connector cant put in two hard disk inside this zebronics cabinet.

You can try any linux flavor. The base itself is quite light. The problem comes with window managers like KDE/Gnome etc., which are heavy.
However if you want to be light on resources, install kde etc., but while running X call up something light like Windowmaker/Afterstep/Xfce.

A few years back I had a sun machine which was very very low on resources(antiquated Sparc 10).
So I compiled windowmaker and instead of CDE(Default WM) I used windowmaker. also tried Afterstep, but windowmaker was the favorite.

you are right about the window managers.

That's what Xubuntu is. UBUNTU minux GNOME plus XFCE = XUBUNTU.

devarishi, you misunderstood.
you don't keed a special distro.
You can choose any distro, and during the install phase choose not to install gnome.
I think you should install from a standard Ubuntu CD as Xubuntu CD may be missing GTX etc., too(In case you want to use programs which use GTK toolkit).
