Re: The best *offline* maps + navigation app

Have Garmin Nuvi 45 which uses Nokia HERE and Google Maps+Nokia HERE app in the mobile.

Google maps for some reason does not latch on to current position in offline mode, even with cached maps.

So HERE it is for me.

Thanks. Some more details, please!
Which phone (if relevant, the exact version - some have more RAM, etc) ? Which version of Android? And what apps do you have running on it (Video seems quite smooth, so maybe your phone has a lightly loaded CPU/GPU? )

My phone is Samsung Duos 2 (S-7582) with 768 MB RAM, Dual-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A9, Android v4.2.2 (Jelly Bean). I would say it's a rather entry level phone. Data connection was turned off. It helps to keep the phone cooler and faster!

Let me share a photo from our recent travelogue that shows the actual mount of the phone. Given outside was too bright, the screen appears rather dark although it's running HERE navigation.

Here is the corresponding video.

Re: The best *offline* maps + navigation app

Thanks gmhossain

Yes, a dual core with less than 1GB is low-end today. Good to know that a phone with this spec is able to handle the tasks you've set it to do.

Considering the number of Google Maps users; does anyone have a script to download the POI(s) from the desktop version's display onto the map in the phone? Or any other technique to at least cache the POIs on the phone?

Thanks again for the info.
"Daily Roads Voyager" is on my wish list.
But I am still wondering if I should go for a tablet with its own stand and put it on the dashboard (like Yoga, Heard iBall launched one as well).
Maybe the vibrations will be too much if I keep it on the dashboard.

Re: The best *offline* maps + navigation app

Here drive is the best according to me, but, on a windows phone.

A lil history:

I started with google maps, fine but no offline navigation and at times crappy route planning.

Moved to Sygic when it was free with map my india maps: Excellent for offline navigation. A bit slow for low end phones but does the job well.

I bought a lumia and tried here maps. Excellent perfect outstanding reliable !
route calculation is very good and up to date.

Sold off my lumia and now I am using a lenovo A6000, installed here drive, but maybe due to internal gps issue or lack of compass, it doesnt work well, random directions, bad positioning.
Tried Navmii, excellent and stable with good interface. Yes, locations arent a lot as compared to google maps, but solves the purpose.

So, according to me:
Lumia/here drive (BEST) > Sygic on android> navmii> google maps

...
That's probably because the A6000, unlike the Lumias and the iPhones, doesn't come with GLONASS in addition to A-GPS.

I totally agree. My lumia 630 had GPS, GLONASS and even BeiDou capability.
Is here drive working fine on other android phones?
Currently i use Navmii, works well with just the GPS on also.

I have recently switched to Micromax Canvas Nitro A311 (Android 4.4.2). No issues with Here Maps/Drive so far.

Re: The best *offline* maps + navigation app

This thread has solved a query I had raised some time back on forum and duly replied by sg sir.
it was suggested that my search for offline navigation would stop at HERE maps and happy to know that the feedback has been good.

Re: The best *offline* maps + navigation app

I just came back from a highway trip and suffered because none of the GPS apps available with us worked.
I have Here Drive+ on my Lumia 720. Since past few months the app freezes when I click Start Navigation after setting the destination. The map just hangs with the navigation arrow stuck on the origin. I tried restarting, re-installing but nothing works. The phone GPS should be fine because it is able to identify my current location and suggest routes to destination. Even Waze and GPS Voice navigation (free edition) did not work well and kept freezing randomly.
I also tried Google Maps on an Android phone. This also behaved erratically. It got stuck at a particular point on the map and kept giving me directions from there to the destination, even when I was already way ahead of that point. I don't know, is my car spooked? Infact, I never had a satisfying experience when using any of these navigation apps.
