Thanks for highlighting this Rehaan. Yes, its happening and what's worse is that if you close the pop up, it will redirect you to the forum page from wherever you are.

Damn, this is just another level to the spying that is already happening to us all. But to inject code into a web-page and even hijack ads - that is kinda creepy. I remember learning about code injections in some security seminar years ago and how to bypass them. Guess many countries have laws against such illegalities. And to think that our ISPs are brazenly flouting regulations!

This happens not only in India but elsewhere also, Please see below link.

This is also one type of net neutrality violation.

Thanks Rehaan, mayankk,

My computer savvy-ness extends to the keyboard, surfing the net and the occasional downloading of articles of interest - and thats it. Folks like you on this forum are doing a signal service spreading awareness on this issue. What little I could gather through the fog is that MTNL seems to have resigned itself to the adage - if you can't beat them, join them.

You are right of course, this needs to be an ongoing battle - a work in progress if you like - if any semblance of privacy is to be maintained.
Thanks once again.

Re: Shady Business: Airtel & MTNL injecting advertisements / js into websites you visit!

Initially my mom spotted these ads on Chrome. But I could not find them on Safari. Also since they are java script, they get blocked in safari unless you enable it from Preferences.

These are a blatant violation of our rights. I hope the laws and regulations do consider this and take strict action from mtnl and Airtel. I can understand Airtel doing it, but why does mtnl need to do this ?

My solution-
These ads can be blocked by excellent plug in called Ad Block (Safari only). While I'm all up for watching ads which genuinely support the page I'm visiting, I hate these in your face kind of ads. The best part, the guy who created this plug in doesn't charge, yet you can donate to him via paypal. I did send a small amount to him. I am no way associated to this person.

Note- on similar lines, you can use a Search engine like DuckDuckGo that doesn't store your search data like Google (and use it for targeted advertisement).

Re: Shady Business: Airtel & MTNL injecting advertisements / js into websites you visit!

Airtel and MTNL are late to the game, as usual. Fivenet (a small regional ISP) was the first to do this AFAIK. I discovered this about 4 years ago:
http://broadbandforum.co/threads/fiv...ebpages.52701/

They stopped it very quickly after I got a few other Fivenet customers riled up and had everyone call and complain. I expect behemoths like Airtel and MTNL to not take swift action, if any. Most people will be oblivious since the ads are injected into webpages and look like conventional ads shown on most websites. I only noticed it because I've always run an ad-blocker.

However, complain to TRAI loudly and frequently. This should not be allowed at any cost. The internet prices are not subsidised and paying customers should NOT be shown ads.

Ah, the point that we are trying to make in this thread isn't about the blocking of such ads - that can be done by the Ad-blocker. But that it is illegal for them to inject such code into the pages you are visiting. You are still paying for the bandwidth!

Well, there you go. DoT just told net neutrality and it's advocates to bugger off

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/t...w/48097355.cms

What this means? Bye bye Skype, Viber, WhatsApp. Bye Bye VoD services from anyone other than your ISP and more to follow.

MTNL injecting ads on google analytics code through MITM (man in the middle) attack

More details here
https://medium.com/@codebreach/mtnl-...s-456d6bf06b9c

Quote:
MTNL is adding a line of javascript into Google’s code, abusing the fact that Google Analytics is used across the web. The one line loads a few porn sites into parts of the website you can’t actually see.

Read the links in the OP. It is to cause more data usage without the user being aware of it (monetary purposes).

Shucks!!! This is increasingly getting more and more weird. I think we need to start cross posting across social media and also write through the proper channels highlighting these practices if they are indeed happening. I am still not sure MTNL folks have a correct understanding of what is happening.

Come to think of it, a government department and its employees typically are least bothered with thinks like how to make you spend another 1 gb additional. And to take to all these underhand tactics to do that when they personally have nothing to gain from it is something that sounds very very remote to me.

It is MTNL. They wont even know WHAT they are injecting!
Some bright spark will have seen this online, and without seeing what he will end up with, made a "yellow sheet" office note to an even more, er, "Savvy" head!
Voila, porn!

I recall google itself has very strict guidelines about its code. I'm sure they know of this by now, and will be on MTNL's case soon, if not already.
