The Background: Chennai's woes are not over yet. The rains have stopped for now but we continue to suffer. 3 days back, a lightening killed my Wifi Router, ADSL modem and 2 NIC from 2 different computers.

Every few years, this sort of thing keeps happening and I keep changing them. I have ACT fiber optics connection as well as Airtel Broadband feeding a NAS server and a Wifi router. I was under the impression that fiber optics will be immune to lightening surges. But the last mile connectivity is through copper CAT 5 cable and that passes the surge to your connected Network Interface card.

There must be a better way to protect these components. Ethernet Surge protectors are available online - but they cost around 3k each. It is almost the same cost as a router and a NIC.

Anyone here has experience with these ethernet - RJ45 as well as modem line RJ11 surge protectors ?

Any ideas ?

I am looking for options too. I had one 'N' wifi modem router acting purely as a modem and connected via ethernet to a second 'AC' router which was doing dual band wifi duty and Gigabit connectivity. Last week's lightning strike in chennai took out the ports on both ends of the connection between the AC-N router. Now my AC routers WAN port is fried while the N router has conked off one ethernet port.

I am also looking for a cost effective solution for the telephone, ACT cable and Airtel dish.

Belkin does have this option on the 6 socket and 8 socket ones, but dont know how effective it is. I have purchased this, but still to be connected. I am looking for something which can be stand alone, like a ADSL splitter which can be connected inline.

It looks like RJ11 ports which are for phone line and ADSL modem. Where did you buy the Belkin and how much did that cost you ?

RJ11 surge protectors are easily available at reasonable cost. But RJ45 surge protectors are expensive and not available in Indian online stores.

Thanks Optimist. With optimism (can't help the pun ;) ) I tried the site but unfortunately can't locate one seller in India.

The one I have does have the RJ11 and RJ45. The mrp is around 3.9. Below is the product image.

I used to have a couple of UPS's which had this feature inbuilt.

Yes. I have an old APC UPC with a surge protection facility for RJ11 too. But that used to cause attenuation of the signal so much that I discarded it.

I got this from Mercy electronics, you could check with them. That said I am yet to use it, since I wanted to relocate the router and that has not happened till now!!
