I wasn't seeing the 'send to desktop (shortcut)' option, but solved it with the instructions here.

Its been ages since I actually opened something from the desktop. I always access desktop from the explorer. Whenever I'm bored/stressed, I just see the desktop's nice wallpaper(which keeps on changing everyday) and get refreshed! No icons to clutter and disturb the view

One day I checked the show desktop icons and was shocked. The entire screen was filled with icons
