Can someone tell me how exactly the customs duty is charged? If I bring a camcorder from US which cost 400USD and the indian street price is 25000Rs, how much Duty will be charged. If it has been used for a few months, will duty reduce?

There is no custom duty if the total amount is not more than 25k ( you need to produce proofs to prove that, even if its used one). Anything above 25k is liable to custom duty ( mentioned in my last post). Remmember 25k limit is for total purchase and not single item.

On the other hand LCD is the newer technology. The life is slightly more of a LCD panel. The power consumption is lesser. it's very clear for HD or DVD viewing but most models dont have good tuners with noise reduction for regular cable viewing.
But you are forgetting one thing. LCD is a panel of transistors. So if one of them conks off, you have a black line. You cannot repair it, you have to replace it. Also brightness of pixel cannot be controlled like in Plasma (reason why Plasma draws more power). Given the current state of monitors, Plasma is a better buy.

BTW, 32" LCD prices have dropped below 50k.

Tanx for this info. The 25K limit, is it on the foreign exchange value or value of the product in india? 400USD is only 17K in rupees. What happens if the product is not available in india and how do they fix the street prices?

oh dont worry about that, they have a very very comprehensive list and have almost all items covered.

25K is INR. and the rates are what they have with them i.e. unless you show the bills in USd saying they are below 25K. then ok. If you cant show the bills then they will decide accordingly.

- Both are Rs.105,000
- R81 has 8000:1 but R71B has 1:5000

Which one is the good buy?

Thanks

I am surprised, final price for 1. is 99K, dude look around, i am sure it is much cheaper than that, around 90K range. you just need to twist the dealers arm a bit more firmly

Just wondering -

How much are 50" Plasmas in India now? Not MSRP but a good 'street' price? Does Panasonic sell them in India - We have a Panasonic one here and I am looking to add a nice TV in India as well?

Also any HD channels at all? I know DTH Sat TV is now being offered through Tatas. Is the quality comparable to US cable and Dish signals on regular channels?

Also if I were to ship a $1500 Plasma to India - what customs duty amount would I be paying?

Thanks!

tata sky is comparable to dish. but hd chanels wont be coming in the near future. its no point shipping because im sure you can get the same over here. and even thought its cheaper over there the customs duty etc wil add up to the same as the price in india.
