I guess they could possibly have been 2010 models, as the Panasonic India website doesn't have them - hasn't been updated beyond 2011 models. But, the U50 and GT50 have made their appearance around the world since Jan this year, and are supposed to make an appearance here. Tchah, should have checked in the new printed catalog that I saw in Metro on Sat evening - will look at it in my next trip. Metro has the XT50 model plasma since last week.

I had been to the Pana Brand Shop in Rajajinagar on Sat evening. Guy said 42ST30 there is some stock in the warehouse. 59K, so if anyone wants they should talk to the nearest Brand Shop. And yes, there IS a 42" in the ST50 range.

Auditioned the new Passive 3D LED model TH-L47ET5 at the Brand Shop. Other than the display tech, specs are virtually the same as the ST series plasma (Web browser, Vierra Connect, etc.). The PQ and depth perception (using a 3D clip) seemed better than the Sony xx720, the Samsung 7 series (both Active 3D), and the LG Passive 3D models. Nice stylish goggles compared to retro-style LG goggles - was comfortable worn over my glasses.

Yesterday I bought Toshiba 46PS20. 46" Full HD LED Tv for Rs.56000. Somehow I felt Toshiba had good picture quality. Light was appearing tobe excellently filled in picture and TV was having very narrow bezel so looking great. TV functionality was minimalistic and every needed functionality was quickly navigable. I would recommend this TV anyday.

So finally, Panasonic is embracing passive 3D.
This is a good news.
Do they also use circular polarization like LG?

And they have passive 3D in LED range only or also in plasma?

What's the price for the 3D passive LED - 42" and 47"?

Honestly, no clue. The Sales guys are not really tech oriented.

AFAIK, no passive 3D in Plasma models yet. Maybe next year?

47" is 1.07L MRP - maybe one can get it for 1L. Good price for a 47" LED - slightly higher than LG I think. 42" should be 60K or less - didn't ask the price.

Are there any 3D TV's which do not require special glasses?
If yes, which ones and what is the price range?
If not, are they expected in the next two years?

As of now none on sale. But toshiba introduced one at CES 2012. Expected to go on sale with a hefty price tag next year.

Guys my Pana Plasma dreams have been revived. I visited the brandshop today and they had the 2012 series on display. WOW what Pic quality. i am totally sold.

Prices:
XT50 with 3D= Rs. 69900

XT50 with 2D= Rs. 61000.

Both the above mentioned sets are 50". I couldnt believe the prices are so good especially for the 61000 model. I think I will be picking up the XT50 next week. I am nothing but amazed. :)

EDIT : I have never seen a 50" T.V with 3D for Rs. 69900 that too a newly launched 2012 model.

Whats the current price of the Panasonic TH P 42 U 30 D (plasma) ?

local brand shop has quoted 44,500/-.

I saw a 2011 Plasma 42" model. I think it was the same model that you are talking about and the price tag was Rs. 44000( Apprx.) I didnt pay much attention to that as i was only looking for 2012 models.

One of my requirements were FULL HD but when I saw XT50's picture quality (I dont remember the exact model name) and its price I was completely sold. To hell with Full HD I need one those. :D

But why buy a 2D when 3D is becoming more common soon?

2D Full HD LCD or LED is great as of now. By the time we start getting sufficient channels in 3D it will be while yet!

I agree that Full HD panels of today are very good.
I don't know how soon 3D channels will come to India, but I guess that will take probably 2 more years and the cost will be too high even after that.


However, I was considering 3D from the point of view of watching movies which could be available on BlueRay/ DVD perhaps. This is the more likely use case for owning a 3D panel.
Another scenario could be 3D gaming perhaps. However saas-bahu serials on 3D would be a no-no.

REASONS:

1) Mommy is old school. The moment she saw the sales guys with glasses she was not willing to buy the T.V because she thought one has to wear glasses whenever you switch it on. So it was important to keep her happy as I never ever dreamt of a 50" T.V. It was always a 40". So when she agreed I thought why not get the 2D.

2) The sales guy was so confused with the glasses himself that he clearly demonstrated what a pain in the back it will be if you really want to use it.

3) I personally dont like the 3D technology. Atleast not yet in India. I have watched quite a few 3D movies in cinema halls and have hardly enjoyed it. It gives me a severe headache whenever I wear those glasses.


So I guess the reasons are justified. :)
