I bought a Toshiba 37” LCD (from Singapore) for my parents in Kerala. It has been around 4 years now, and no issues so far. I guess the brand is not very popular in India, but I find their televisions to be pretty nice, and good value compared to some of the more expensive brands.

Thanks! And that is what I am planning to do. I am not going to let them run away with my hard earned money. I am just restraining myself from putting it as of now as I am following up with them on emails.

If they do not agree, I'm gonna go public about this.

Can someone suggest a 32" TV that can play 1080p movies directly off my hard-disk? Don't want to blow a lot of money...so suggest something on the lower side. Also, suggest a good 5.1 system which is not really expensive.

Whats the kind a money you are willing to shell out. Samsung and Sony will burn a bigger hole in your pocket as compared to others.

LG I suppose is in the mid range. 6200 series will cost you somewhere around 42K

I can vouch for this series as I am using the 47 inch one and am super impressed with it. What I realized was that if, you have a router at home and a PC/laptop, you can also stream your movie on this TV from the HDD of the PC/laptop using the built in wireless on the TV.

Other goodies include 3D, a few useful smart apps, built in HDD for recording (1.6 GB useable), etc.

Samsung displays have one of the best USB playback features. I have a 40 incher 6 series LCD which was purchased 3 years back (Diwali 2010) and it has played all the contents (from various containers) I threw at it so far. The display is still on its factory firmware and I did not have the need to update it. Some of the files were amounting to 16-18 GB in size owing to the HD audio streams in them (DTS-HD MA/ Dolby Tru HD).

The interface is intuitive, neat and clutter-free; browsing through the folders is quick and easy. The LG displays have a UI which is too gaudy and a bit slower in comparison. Many files failed to play properly. In some cases, the audio stream wouldn't play.

I'd say, take a hard drive filled with media files of various containers, take it to a Croma or a Reliance Digital outlet, promptly request the salesperson to plug the drives on some 32-incher displays, browse through the contents using the remote to get the hang of it. And take a call.

What is your budget? You get pseudo 5.1 systems such as those local Intex types from 2.5k to proper HTIB systems with at least one digital input (coaxial/optical) for 12k from Philips. Then, there are the more expensive AVR setups which costs north of 25k.

For a proper 5.1 experience, you need a setup with a digital input so the AC3/DTS audio streams from the source can be decoded. Period.

Was looking at this thread for some time since I am planning to buy a TV.

I was thinking of Sony, but not seeing much about Sony TVs here. Any experience with their TRILUMINOS models? Any feedback on Sony Bravia series will be helpful.

I'm looking for a 40-45 inch size TV with FullHD, Built-in WiFi, and having IPS panel, preferably

I want to spend anything below 32K. I'll be going to electronic showrooms this week as the past weekend was spent hunting the furniture.

I'll be taking my 500gb and 1tb hard-disk drive to test the formats out.

About 5.1, I think I'll just ask my mom to courier our old Philips 5.1 system which no one is using. Agreed, it's some 6 year old system, but it still works wonderfully when I checked it during my home-town visit :)

Just saw your post, I have purchased two Toshiba 40 inch TVs (40PB20 IIRC). I bought one for my use in May 2012 and it was the VFM factor that was the clinching factor. It did everything that the LGs and Samsungs did at a much lower price. It plays almost everything that I have thrown at it in terms of movie formats. I was so impressed by the overall experience that I bought one for my parents in Dec 2012. Both TVs performing well and I enjoy watching the Premier League in all its HD glory with my Dad :D

I even convinced a friend of mine to buy one last year and talked a colleague into going in for the same Toshiba model next month. Thumbs up overall!

Update:-

Panasonic wanted to replace my ST50 with a LED DT55 but asked me to pay more which i promptly rejected. Even the DT series cannot give me the picture quality as my ST.

They kept forcing me to take the ET 50 which i again promptly refused. Its been 3 months and they are yet to fix the issue.

The service centre is playing their SLA games.

I raised the issue on Oct 11th and the service guys closed it without informing me on Nov first week and re raised to reset the SLA sometime later. A week back they closed the request again saying service completed without informing me again. I called them up and asked them to re-raise the request with original date of issue.

After almost 3 months they decided to now replace the panel instead of the TV and they have ordered the panel which will take another 30 days.

I will write a complete detailed report of Panasonic service and this may help potential buyers to AVOID panasonic and go and buy some product where they respect customers and fix issues.

^Sad to hear that. But this was kind-of-expected since the company is not keen to cater to a handful of customers using those products.
Please write to their MD, Manish Kumar on twitter and also send a complain to the Japanese office.

I fail to understand why they have been so hesitant to import the panel directly (is it coming from Japan?) until now. Yes, it is an expensive part, but you have already paid for it in the warranty.
Ironically, all imports happen somewhere near Chennai which is where you are located.

This is a longish post but worth it.
This October end, we were watching tv when our just over 2 year old (2 yrs 1 month) 40" Sony Bravia LCD screen started flickering. We were clueless so called up service center and it was sent to them. After 2 days, they informed that the panel is gone so it needs to be replaced. I said fine but got pissed off after learning the price for panel replacement, a whopping Rs.24k including cost plus taxes. I mean how can you expect to buy a tv for Rs.45k(MRP) and it doesn't last long and then such an exorbitant price for its repair? I refused repair and got it back home. Then I wrote to Sony India on their Facebook page and Twitter. After a few days, I was contacted by them wherein I told them that its a shame if Sony cannot provide TVs that could last, they might as well stop selling. I also told them that Sony products coming in from their factories in China were not good as told by an insider so they must not charge so much for China ka maal(mine was China made). So they offered me to get my TV repaired for Rs.6500 only including cost of panel and taxes. I was ok with it as the cost of 2 year extended warranty was Rs.5000 which was not taken so went ahead with it. After a week, they called up to inform that I need to deposit a demand draft of Rs.6378/- at service center but then there was a catch, the parts were unavailable for replacement for my tv model so they were offering me a NEW TV as a replacement which would be the next upgrade of my tv model. So I accepted their offer and yesterday, a 40" LED (40R45) was delivered to me, thankfully Made in Malaysia.(Rs54k LCD replaced by a Rs.61k LED, prices are MRP). All this has made me realize more that 'Written complaints are mightier than verbal duels."

Just bought a new Sony W800A 55'' 3D LED. Fantastic PQ. Passive 3D. Comes with inbuilt WIFI and Screen Mirroring for compatible smartphones. Great TV for the price.

AFAIK, the W800 is being phased out for the newer 850A and 900 series that comes with Sony's proprietory Trilumnious Display. Read up on Google about the Trilumnious display and I figured it's not worth it mostly because of the price difference and unnatural colors on the Trilumnious Displays.

AFN, the W800 comes with a good 15-20k discount off the sticker price whereas there are ZERO discounts on the W850.

HifiVision has great reviews on the W series as well.

This was a completely unplanned buy and we went for it due to a very sweet deal offered.
Overall I like the picture quality and the look and feel of the unit.I did find the sound system to be adequate but not the best there is. Definitely needs External Speakers
It plays all the popular formats that I have tried till date and the response time is also decent.
The photo browse options take a tiny bit of lag when opening or changing the picture (jpeg) file but nothing that should make me unhappy.

Overall I would rate this at 3.5 / 5

Thanks Neil, I placed the order for Toshia 39L3300 from Snapdeal during GOSF and have been waiting for delivery for over a week now. The TV is apparently on its way (would've possibly entered Andhra border :D . I expected the seller to send it through a flight but he chose roadway instead)
