Re: The TV Thread - LCD, LED etc.

I am thinking of getting a 55" 4K TV. VU and MI have quite a lucrative offer.

Has any one got the VU 55" 4K TV? If so can you tell me if the viewing angle is narrow (as in an LCD monitor - TCL has that), or wide as in LG & Samsung. If you have one a model number would be appreciated.
I am looking for this model

Coming to Fire stick topic, I've been using Duracell Chota power and they too don't last over 2 months. Guess rechargeable batteries are the economical way to go. I guess these BT remotes are always on and keep searching for signal which drains the batteries much earlier than usual.
Spray some WD40. Let it soak and then clean with a ear bud.

I suggested a relative, and they bought the 50 inch Pixelight series for 28K from Flipkart.
They are really happy with the TV in general. The USP of VU over MI is that VU uses DirectLED vs EdgeLED, so your screen in much brighter at the centre of the display.

VU will have no ads on their homescreen as is the case heard (not verified personally) with MI TV.

Also, the fact they got 2 year extended warranty for 3k from VU, assured them of taking the plunge and venturing out of their former Sony land. :P

I am also planning to buy a cheap TV. Deciding between MI and VU.
The latest MI 55 inch TV comes with 10-bit panel, HDR 10 and direct backlit.
I would think MI as a brand should be better than VU.
One thing I like with VU is Netflix is available which is not there in MI TV.

Any practical experience on these TVs would be welcome.

Re: The TV Thread - LCD, LED etc.

Hi Guys,
I have a Samsung Smart TV which comes pre-loaded with Netflix, amazon Prime and a few other apps but NOT "Hotstar". I have tried accessing "Hotstar" through the browser and sometimes it works and sometimes not.
I have tried downloading the app but just cannot manage it. I already have a "Hotstar" account which works fine on my phone.
Can someone please advise as to how to download "Hotstar" to my TV?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
SS

Re: The TV Thread - LCD, LED etc.

  1. Install Hotstar App on your Smart Phone from Play Store.
  2. Login to App.
  3. Connect your phone with Samsung TV through Smart View.
  4. Play any Movie.
  5. Get to full Screen Mode.
  6. It will take TV one minute to adjust the resolution.

Hi Sebring,

Thanks for the prompt response.
I actually want to download the "Hotstar" app on to the TV as other people in the house also want to view the same. For some reason, the "casting" which you suggested works from my phone but not my son's which is a a One Plus. Also. it's a pain to keep using the phone when ne has a Smart TV.

Thanks & Regards,
SS

I think Samsung uses Tizen OS for their Smart TVs and not Android. Currently, Hotstar is only available for Android, iOS and Browsers, so there is no other option available. I'm in the same situation and use screen cast from my mobile to watch anything on Hotstar. Thankfully, I only use Hotstar for HBO shows, so only have to do this for a little while.

Thanks NewPunter.
As the old saying goes; You learn something new every day! especially on Team BHP!!
I always assumed that all Smart TV's (well, the established brands anyway) were using Android. Never heard of this Tizen OS before.
Oh! Well... So much for that. Two hours of my life wasted.
Cheers,
SS

If you still want an Android Experience then an easy alternative is to get an Android TV Box. I got an Android TV Box for my Parents Sony TV which was an old one and not "Smart". This kind of converts a non-Smart TV to a Smart TV and has a Built-In Wi-fi Receiver. It allows you to install any app that you want from the Google PlayStore.

Multiple options are available - check on Amazon.in. Here is an example: Link

You are welcome . Tizen is actually a pretty good OS and is more fluid than Android and consumes lesser power. This is the same OS that is used on Samsung Galaxy Watch and other wearables from Samsung, which is why they have a longer battery life than the ones based on Android Wear.

The only problem is that it doesn't have as many apps as Android, although most of the bigger apps are available, since Samsung is a pretty big company and sells lots of TVs.

Thanks srivatsa.

I really don't see any point spending 4.5k on this Android box as I already have a Smart TV - and, that too, just for "Hotstar"!! However, it's another useful piece of information and an option to bear in mind. Guess for now I will just have to cast from my phone.

Cheers,
SS

Another alternative is to take a Hathway connection and they are providing a free chromecast based device that runs on Android
