I had purchased a Sony KDL-40W600B 6 years back and it is in Sony Service centre far the last one month due to board issues. They are trying to get stock but don't have it in hand.

So, I have planned to go for a OLED for my living room. I am thinking of the LG CX or GX 65" or the Sony A9G 65". Although both the panels are the same, some people suggest Sony, saying that it has a better processor and the image comes out better than LG. However, I prefer the LG WebOS and the magic remote. Can someone throw light on this and give some suggestions?

I have LG 55C8 OLED. I absolutely love it. Specially webOS. I would always prefer webOS over android because of it's ease of use.
I absolutely love picture quality. While buying, i compared Sony and LG OLED. Found them equally impressive.

We're looking for a good LED/LCD tv for my husband and I. Please recommend a good one. Budget approx 50k

What's the screen size you are looking at?

About 40-45 inch is good.

Looking to buy a 50" 4k TV with a budget of ~50k and the LG 50" 7290 / LG 49" 7300 is looking like a good option. Any users of this TV - what has been the experience been like ?

I have been watching a lot of reviews and the general opinion is to choose these if you are sure you want a 'branded' TV, otherwise the 'budget' brand offer a similar experience with more features (Higer brightness panel, Dolby vision, Android OS) at a much lower cost.

Being a happy user of a 4 year old VU 40" HD, I am also considering the Ultra 4k 50" at 36k which has very good reviews overall. Sound is not a factor for me as I have a Sony soundbar.

Does Dolby vision make a lot of difference if HDR is already present ? Is the LG worth around 10-15k more than the VU ?

Any reason for considering 50 inch over 55 inch. Just asking since the price difference is very nominal. Below are my thoughts on the respective 55 inch sizes. All of them come in 50-inch models as well. Hope it is helpful.

I have a 4 month old LG 55' 7350. It is really good. I am looking around to pick one more in the same size. The LG 55' 7290 is my second preference. It is an online only model, almost same specs to the 7350 which I currently have. Experience has been great, pretty good picture quality.

A friend of mine picked up the LG 55' 7290 10 days ago on Flipkart. It usually retails for 49.99k, but he got some offer discount, plus cashback on Flipkart Axis card and it cost him 45k net. Superb value in my opinion. Makes little sense to consider the 'budget' brands.

I am currently looking at this new Samsung model. It's a new one and a 2021 model. It's 55inch and has a slightly higher refresh rate than the other ones in the price range and is available for 46.5k on Samsung India site. :thumbs up

Thanks for the reply. I shall check out this Samsung too.

The reason behind 50" and not 55" is because the 55" will not fit on my TV table. I want both options to be usable - wall mount as well as on the TV table.

How are the blacks on the LG, as some reviews talk about it being inconsistent ? Keeping aside the brand part, is the picture quality better than an equivalent VU, Hisense, TCL, etc ?

The Samsung Serif is a design masterpiece but is out of your budget. Try haggling hard at a few stores and get the best quote. This is a buyer's market now.

Else check out the Sony 43X74 or the older LG UM7780.

Well if it helps, the 55 inch has its table stands 40 inches apart. I measured yesterday. The LG one is the first 4k TV I have spent time with to be honest, so I am genuinely pretty impressed - coming from a big 2013 Sony LCD. Have hooked it up to my PS4 and played some graphic rich games like Red Dead Redemption 2. It was a visual treat - the picture quality looks quite good to me. The viewing angle is a bit strange if you don't see it straight up front, something which is not there on my older TV's.

No clue about Hisense & TCL. Was very tempted by price of 65 inch VU, but was a little disappointed by picture quality in terms of shadows, and overall sharpness (perhaps more noticeable in larger screen size). This was also experienced with PS4 connected.

Ok, I have this very fundamental question here. Why do the traditional brands like Sony, LG, Samsung etc simply have a premium or rather costlier offering than the smartphone makers? Even the premium smartphone makers such as Oneplus have a TV of similar spec compared to big branded ones at sag about 0.5 times 0.75 times the cost. Can anyone actually tell me are there basic differences? Like are the big brand offerings having much long lasting components? Better and faster processors? Or is it just that the big brands are used to so much margins they just don’t want to be comparable to the smartphone TVs? Are the smartphone TVs really inferior?
In the mobile phone market Apple just commands a premium both because of its actually superior performance and it’s tremendous brand value. Is the big brand TV space the same?
I’m out for a 43 inch 4K tv, but I’m having a tough time in choosing between big brands or smartphone brands. Can anyone here actually tell me does a 0.5 times premium justify? If a simple thing like faster processing and longer life is on the plate, I will indeed go in for the bigger brand rather than ending up frustrated 2 years later.

....

I'm in a similar boat. There are no good reviewers for TV's in India who can give you an unbiased review of all options available in the market. Unless you put all these TV's side by side, it's really hard for an average consumer to tell the difference (not considering the really high end TV's here).

I read recently that true HDR requires atleast 700-1000 nits of brightness, so all mid range TV's offering HDR with 350-400 nits panels is just marketing and it makes no real difference. Totally confused with all the options available at such different price points for what is on paper a similar spec.

I have a Mi 32 inch TV. The picture quality even of SD channel is a LOT better on the Sony 32 inch (non-smart) TV which costs twice as much and noticeably better on Samsung (non-smart) TV which costs 2.5k more than my TV.

Don't know for the ones at the higher end. But at the budget level I know that the picture quality is different between those brands. Even DD national SD looked great on Sony TV when I was watching same episode of Ramayan on two different TVs rl:

I have two TCL 4k TVs at 75 inch and 55 inch respectively along with an LG 49 inch 4k one. The TCL ones support HDR and are probably around 350 nits in brightness. I can safely say that HDR looks quite good on them. Even at 350 nits, the peak brightness is way too intense. Obviously the effect would be enhanced with a 1000 nit brightness but for normal usage, 350 to 400 nits is just fine. All HDR does is to intensify the difference between brightness and shadows along with sharper colours. So the difference between say 50 nits at dim and 350 nits at peak brightness is still quite noticeable.

Cause a lot of that money goes into R&D and Marketing of the product. For the former it is a continuous effort of refining and improving the product, which the cheap names don't need to do. They just piggy back on a technology LG or Sony developed. Even when they do, they don't get it right most of the time. All you need to do is pick up the remote of an LG Smart TV and compare the fluidity of the interface and you will forget about the .5x increase of the price you pay. Not to forget, superior picture quality as a result of better panels and picture processing software they use. LG focus on the sound too. Their TV's have even surpassed Sony when it comes to inbuilt sound quality. Granted the sound aspect is not so important for most of us as we end up using some external speaker system. Agree that the big brands over charge and there is little you can do about it. You are unlikely to find the same levels of service from a cheap TV manufacturer versus LG or Sony.

There are some Chinese brands that are starting to close the gap between LG and some of the other big names. One that comes to mind is TCL. I was window shopping the other day and browsing the TV section at an AV store. I was impressed by some of the TCL's that were on display. Heck; if someone had swapped the name labels on them, I would have picked it up.
