Samsung is good, SONY is unbeatable. If it electronics it is Japanese than the Korean. It is your decision to select the brand. When buying, ask the dealer to have both SONY and Samsung with the same program/DVD connected and compare them with both have the having the optimal settings.

Which LCD TV?

(I searched for the lcd tv threads but all of them contains old information. So starting new one. Aug 2007)

We are planning to buy a lcd tv for a room of size 12ft * 16 ft. I am planning to connect cable / dishtv , a dvd player , and Logitech z5500 with this system. I can wait for next 2/3 months max. The budget is around 75 – 1lkh.
Can you please suggest me which one to buy? Also does buying it in US and then brining it here will help? ( like my z5500 saved 10+k )

Also can xbox 360 play all the dvd's / cd's that we get from dvd library in india? If yes then I may go for the xbox 360 instead of a dvd player.

Thanks in advance for the help

Check out LCD's from Sharp. They are expensive but supposed to be one of the best. Check out Sharp's website for more details.

The xbox 360 does play dvds including pirated dvds and HD DVDs if you buy the HD DVD drive seperately,

Also consider the Ps3 which has an inbuilt Blu Ray Disc player.

Ok ,

Let me be more specific,

Whats should be the size? 37 inches / 40 inces or anything else?

Price is range is
1) sony
2) Samsung
3) Lg

My question is , even if we buy the most expensive brand which is sony, what kind of diffrence it makes in picture in daily viewing? I am planning to use tatasky/ dishtv , so is it worth paying 20 - 25 k more for sony comared to samsung / lg?

I saw two 40 inch models from samsung
LA40R81B ~85k
LA40S81B ~79k

Any idea about these models?

Also brands like toshiba / sharp they are good products, but how about after sell service warrenty etc?

Sharp makes some excellent LCD's. Just got one 32 inch X6 model Sharp Aqous for 45k (grey market, VSP price is 55k)
Clairty is amazing... looking to get a 37 inch for my room by diwali as prices will crash a lot according to sources.

I am also planning to buy an LCD during diwali as even i have heard that either there will be a huge price drop or good discounts or both. I have decided to go for samsung as a brand and 40" one. Just need to decided on the model to go for. What are the important features to look for when selecting the LCD?

Contrast ratio, resolution size, HD capabilities and anything else? Btw, what is the minimum contrast ratio that we should look for? 5000: 1?

This is like ICE. Forget the specs. Go out and see the TV. whichever picture clarity you like best choose that.

The way to see is to have the 2-3 shortlisted TV's close by. Any multibrand electronics shop will have that. Then have them show the same picture. Look at the level of detail, sharpness, colour depth. Make sure that the picture settings are the same in both the tv's.

Currently the highest spec is the Samsung Bordeaux Art R81 series. I don't think you need the full HD models i.e. 1920X1080 resolution. The current gen of 1366X768 is quite sufficient for DVD's, DTH broadcast. Even while viewing HD content the difference noticeable is not worth the cost.

Samsung's current Full HD model is the M81 series.

Sony has a new model called the V300 series. These have a very nice picture quality when it comes to DTH broadcasts. The samsung is the best overall but I found the DTH broadcast a touch soft.

Great advice, i was thinking the same. I rather like samsung and don't mind considering LG too. I think sony is quite expensive. What is the current price of Art R81 of samsung? I am thinking the 40" of these two companies may come down to 70K or less by Diwali. Is my assumption correct?

I think you sorta contradicted yourself here. The highest spec Samsung today is the M81 (Mosel Blaque). Sometime back we got ourselves a 46M81 the dealer threw in a HD DVD player (Samsung) and wall mounting. All for about Rs. 2.1L.

Lol. yeah Navinji was contradictory. What I meant was the highest non Full-HD model is the R81 whereas the highest Full-HD model is the M81. There is another lower Full-HD model called the Neo-Mosel or the Nseries.

Nice choice with M81. But do you have a HD content? That Samsung HD DVD player is also a good one. It was free as an offer sometime back. I believe it costs Rs.7990.
