Well, I finally figured it - Seems coffee with me doesn't work with LBM .. perhaps because he is married

I had to set it up as a new extended partition after which it showed as free space (in green color)

I then set it up as a new Logical Drive with Label z:

It is now formatting the drive .. I think it should work once that gets completed.

Good your problem is solved.
Normally Win 2000/XP should auto detect USB drives and assign drive letters but due to a bug sometimes it doesnot. So you have to manually assign drive letters.

Apart from the utility what tsk suggested, partition magic is another very good software to get rid off HDD and related issues.

I think you have the RONTOKBRO VIRUS. Thats what happened to my USB drive and then I had to format the whole PC. The USB had it and now your PC has it to . You have to start windows in safe mode and then run a special program called Sdat from the DOS command box. It shall kill most of it but maybe not all. Everytime you shut down and restart the PC it shall replicate all files which are opened and make your PC real slow!
If you need sdat and a set of instructions contact me by email
Regards,
Safari dude
