Just Facebook can kill an upcoming OS by deciding they will not make apps for them. All these supposed social network sites works on custom protocols and it is not possible to develop clients for them without owners consent.

Another thing to consider here is the government support. If Chinese goverment decides to ban android in china, then it is game on. That is all the support Huawei will need to prosper a new OS. App ecosystem will grow in china and it would be less difficult for them to take that ecosystem to the outside world and complete with android and iOS.
Regarding the app eco system, does not the ban also extend to necessary apps that are American like Facebook, Netflix, Amazon, etc?

Which basically means even if they somehow convince people to get on their OS, you still cannot get access to these basic apps.

Hence, I don't think there are two ways to this. Lack of Android support would kill Huawei's smartphone business outside China. They can only hope for a settlement to reach.

100% agreeing with the above point and along with that China should ban Apple products completely in their mainland. Apple enjoys whooping 17% product share in China. Then it is game on

I don't think China can afford to ban Apple in revenge becasue China is earning lot of revenue from local Apple factories. Lot of Chinese people are also employed there.

And it's a long known fact that most of the Chinese manufacturers have been 'stealing' data using the devices they sell through out the world, mostly without the consent of the users.

One more big blow to Huawei. ARM to end licenses, development etc with Huawei. ARM provides CPU cores and architecture which is required for chips ie KIRIN CHIPS and processor for mobiles. Microsoft has also removed Huawei laptops from Store. So the war is 'full-on'

Re: Google cuts ties with Huawei

Huawei is lacking true innovation as explained in this article. They have stolen and cheated their way to current market share. America is only protecting it's valuable innovation.http://patentvue.com/2018/12/06/huaw...ue-innovation/

Notice a case in point America's biggest NASA rockets use Russian rocket engines which are expensive, they could have stolen the technology but no self-respecting power would throw away it's hard won respect for a a few paltry technologies, there's always a big picture view behind their actions unlike China which is a totalitarian despotic country that oppresses it's own people by tracking them with facial recognition and denies basic access to travel and right to freedom of religion by using prison labor camps.

I had to read the article thrice to make sure that I was going to say the right thing in response.

Can you show me where in the article it says that Huawei is lacking innovation and have "stolen and cheated their way to current market share"? The article seems to suggest that Huawei aren't very original, not very forward thinking but where does it say they stole? They have purchased the patents - legally. Many companies do that. Even a company on the cutting edge of technology - Apple do that. And also, the article you have quoted itself mentions the fact that "The lack of US patents is one barrier to entry into US technology markets for many overseas companies, however Huawei’s barriers at this time appear related to US governmental policies related to national security and technology protection."

America isn't really protecting their innovation here - it is only protecting their homegrown companies from competition.

I agree about the oppression, facial recognition for ethnic minorities, the labour camps etc. But to say America is a saint is well

But the situation is turning bitter day after day. China might initiate something drastic to counter. Let us wait and watch.

It is rather well-known that Huawei stole source code/IP from Nortel, leading to its own dominant position in the industry and the latter's demise.

It is more like they completely destroyed Nortel thanks to industrial espionage. It is a completely unscrupulous company with zero regard to others IP and code. They also are a serial GPL violator.

^^ This

Forced technology transfers, forced local ownership. Lets not for a minute pretend that its a one sided offensive.

Re: Google cuts ties with Huawei

Regarding theft of IP, it helped them reach the top fast. It alone is not responsible for their position today.

Being associated with multiple companies including Nortel, Lucent, Nokia myself, it's the cost that sounded death knell to all companies. Also time taken by companies to move from old world technology where they dominated to new ones complicated things.

We all know how dotcom bubble burst for Lucent and Nortel. They sold gear on loan to new startups and later it made them downsize at crucial moments. Huawei being dominant in a big market and having low costs grew easily. Nortel had a small division working on IP routing/switching that is now part of Nokia and helping.

So to continue saying that they still steal is like blaming EVMs. They might be doing it in cryptography or other things used for statecraft now a days. Not in communication market where they are making 100 billions.

Re: Google cuts ties with Huawei

For may years Google and Microsoft did all these backdoor data collection discreetly. Only in last few years they incorporated the data access to their privacy policy and terms. But still they are collecting lot of data discreetly. So these things are industry-wide practices for a long long time. Without these discreet data collections neither Google nor Microsoft would have reached the level they are today.

I believe Huawei's business growth is worrying US more than any security threat.

Banning the most popular OS's isn't going to take Chinese Manufacturers anywhere. A less developed ecosytem will be the main culprit for its death.
Case in Point is the BBOS. How they struggled when 'apps' were the only deciding factor to choose a platform. Even after trying to play catch up, they bled. And developers would be happy with just a couple of platforms to port their apps. As it is, the variety of fluctuation on android gives them nightmares.

Even if Huawei make a homegrown OS, convince BBK and the gang to hop on to it, what will they do for the Non-China Markets? As much as they depend on the China Market, global reach and presence is of equal importance, since a majority of Chinese are globe trotters.
Once they stepout of China for work or Vacation, how will they call for Uber or use Google Maps ?
