Motorola's Razr flip phone is back as a $1,500 folding-screen smartphone

Motorola and Verizon has announced a new Razr phone. It will retail at US$1500 and gets a 6.2-inch foldable main display.

Th Razr gets an ultra wide 6.2-inch screen (2142 x 876) as well as a 2.7-inch secondary screen (600 x 800) which can be used when the device is folded. The external display lets you respond to notifications, take selfies, play your music and use Google Assistant amongst others without having to flip open the phone.

It also gets a 16-megapixel main camera, while the battery is claimed to be 2,510 mAh. The phone is powered by a Snapdragon 710 processor and gets 6GB of memory along with 128GB of storage. The Razr runs on Android Pie 9.

In terms of connectivity, the phone gets a USB C port without a 3.5mm audio jack. It is compatible with 4G LTE networks but won't be useable with the upcoming 5G norms.

Preorders for Verizon customers begin at December 26, 2019 while actual deliveries are expected to commence by January 9, 2020.

Last I heard this phone is actually launching a lot later than speculated. That's the reason why the specs aren't quite impressive as they sound now. The processor was already quite average to start of with.

Lets see how they price it in India though. Manufacturers have literally had a free hand in pricing for the niche market and I hope they price it sensibly. Not expecting it to be an ultimate VFM proposition, no niche phone is.

This will be about 1600 USD. So no way this will be VFM in India. Expect a 1 lakh plus price tag atleast!

I have not been this excited about a new phone release in recent times.

Also, Motorola will be cashing in on the nostalgic factor attached to the Razr a lot more than selling it on the basis of specs etc.

Those interested can pre-register on Motorola India's website.

Best,

Re: Motorola's Razr flip phone is back as a $1,500 folding-screen smartphone

I must admit I was awaiting this release all year long. I knew it was coming and was following every news article on the upcoming Razr from rumours, to renders to patent applications; I was very excited about this phone. Unfortunately having seen photos and videos of it in use, I must say that I am absolutely dismayed by how bulky it is. It simply does not deserve the Razr moniker because it is too fat to be called a Razr IMO

This does seem like a trend these days though flagship phones back in 2017 were between 7 and 8 mm thick now they are between 9 and 11 mm thick and weigh a good 30 grams more atleast. I don't like this trend to be honest.

Get an iPhone 11 Pro Max 512 gigs for $1449 and save up on $ 51. Absolutely not worth it. Similar with the Samsung fold, dunno who would buy this or that!!

I somehow dig those yesteryear flip phones.
Are there no cheaper flip phone options - just for kicks of having a flip phone?

Re: Motorola's Razr flip phone is back as a $1,500 folding-screen smartphone

Most disappointed with (battery) specs. A product with a $1500 price-tag better have the best specs to satisfy the customers. This phone is the best example of Form over Function. I'm more concerned about the large screen on the Razr holding up compared to the Galaxy Fold. Reason: The small screen can't be used for anything else other than glancing at the notifications.

That being said, I'd rather have this type of compact phone over the Galaxy fold which opens up to be a tablet. I'm a big fan of small phones.

Like any technology, we've to wait for it to mature. In the 90's, phones weren't affordable by most people. Almost everybody has a smartphone in 2019. I'm sure we'll see foldables which cost $500 in 3-5 years. Not cheap, but far more affordable.

Not very thrilled with the new Razr, but got to admit that this is the best implementation (yet) of a foldable touchscreen phone.

Galaxy Fold looks like a science project in comparison.

Not a flagship, this is a trial model at best to see market response. The can't put a flagship grade SD855 or 865 on the RAZR and make it look like the current one. SD710 fits well and was best suited for this as per Lenovo. Same case for batteries since huge batteries will occupy space and won't fit well on the flip phone. The current battery is already split into two and is on either sides of the phone.

Re: Motorola's Razr flip phone is back as a $1,500 folding-screen smartphone

Nostalgic value can give a start, but theres no excuse to push a extremely premium product without a Top of line processor when phones costing half that much offer the advanced processor. Infact the SnapDragon 855 would've optimised battery usage & helped the split battery perform better.

IMO It needed to be exponentially better to command the demanded price.
