Re: Solutions for keeping guests cool on a terrace / open area?

We are all barking the wrong tree. Its the terrace floor which is the cause for intense radiant heat in coastal places as the open air would be much cooler, though significantly humid, due to sea breeze.

Try painting the terrace floor white(weathering paints). On the day of the party cover the floor with thick coir mats(we should get it on rent from Pandal wallahs), for the entire day. This prevents the the concrete from absorbing heat from sunlight. Can spray water over the mats couple of hours before the party and remove the mats just before the furnitures are laid.

Using iced water with mist fans and Tower ACs diagonally will work wonders along with these precautions.

You may create a wooden pole framework on the roof. Then get coconut mats of the type shown in the image.

The coconut leaves will dry after a while. But it will continue to keep out the heat. And rains.

To keep away insects you may mix some boric acid powder (carrom board powder) in water and splash or spray on to the coconut leaf roof.

I think you can experiment with eucalyptus oil in water. It will keep out mosquitoes.

Then buy the industrial fans.

We use 2 of such coolers at our village to tackle similar problem and it works like a charm.
Only thing is we use it in much drier climate. You can also rent them to test.

Re: Solutions for keeping guests cool on a terrace / open area?

Rent a few packaged air conditioning units for the days you have events. If you can afford it, let it be a permanent install. Cost a few lacs at the most. No ducting business. The air handling unit just blasts cold air towards the seating or standing area.

I have seen the above sort of deployment during large events held in open spaces, in Kerala where humidity levels are 90% for most part of the year. I guess this is pretty similar to Bombay. This solution does not make it feel like a typical aircon space but drops the temperature and humidity levels, or, atleast the real feel of it is reduced making your guests feel more comfortable.

Here in Delhi those mist fans work wonders in an open area and to make them all weather put up a small tent on top. Don't know the brands however, Our office buildings have them for security guards, will check for the brands too, next time I cross them

Yes, coconut leaf based setup help keep the heat out. But isnt this more applicable during the day ? GTO is asking for cooling in the evenings mainly - the time for dinner /parties.

If changing the roof/ terrace tiles is an option, change it to Johnson Coolroof tiles. It keeps the roof cool by a huge margin and walking barefoot even on hot sun is a pleasure. The even on an open terrace there is no heat radiation from the tiles ( even during 40 deg heat). Did this to my house and the terrace is the go to place even during hot summers. You wont need a pergola or any kind of roof.

The only downside is that the these tiles come in white or ivory colours so need periodic cleaning.
