re: How to connect two buildings via wireless LAN

Has anyone used TP Link's repeaters that work like Ubiquiti's ?

I am experimenting with connecting two apartments via TP-Link outdoor CPEs (510). These can be installed as a pair (and are capable of running OpenWRT as well).

https://www.amazon.in/TPLINK-300MBPS...dp/B00N2RO63U/

Apartments are in different floors of the same building (27th and 4th). It is more of an experiment, so I want to keep cost low.

I have good amount of experience running wireless gear both from TP-Link and Ubnt. Ubnt is very good and reliable for long distance links as long as there is a clear line of sight.

TP-Link CPE510 is a 5ghz outdoor unit and can work both as an AP and CPE. However the range is quite limited and prone to interference from other 5ghz devices in the vicinity. There is frequent hanging problem too that requires a hard reboot.

You can actually run a CAT6 cable if possible externally which will be more reliable and perhaps cheaper too. The max length is limited to 328 feet and in your case it would not cross that limit. Plus you can have upto a Gigabit availble between the two ends.

If you must do wireless then go with either Ubnt or Mikrotik outdoor equipment.

Thanks for the pointers. How is this outdoor CPE ? https://www.amazon.in/Ubiquiti-Nanos.../dp/B00DCNRTAG

Setting up wired connections seem to be difficult (might require drilling holes to reach wiring shafts)

Ubnt is much better. Although i will recommend the AC band for better and reliable throughput. See this page https://www.ubnt.com/airmax/nanostationm/ and select eirher the 5 ghz or the AC band model.

Also try your local dealer instead of Amazon. Strong possibility that you will find it cheaper at the local dealer. Look up the dealer list on ubnt website.

The Nanostation AC loco at https://www.ubnt.com/airmax/nanostation-ac/ should be a good item to consider.

I tried over the weekend and this worked like a charm during a test.
  1. Total cost ~8k (7k for a pair of Outdoor CPEs and rest for 70 feet Cat6 Cable )
  2. Found a place where both CPE has "approx" line of sight. Just one wall in-between.
  3. No reduction in internet access speed (~24 mbps for source as well as target location). Source location has internet connection.
  4. Just ~1.5 milliseconds of additional latency (across 4 additional LAN/WiFi Hops)
I will test LAN speed next weekend.

Things to be done :

  1. Mound CPS properly (just placed randomly next to windows at the moment)
  2. Orient CPS to face each other
  3. Test LAN speeds
  4. See stability of this system over time (How does it behave in Mumbai Monsoons for example)
