I havent got good review on "Sukam" batteries, that leaves me with "Exide & the Amaron"
Bad after sales are specific to the brand and the region. Not all brands have bad after sales. Some non brand products are even better than branded products. Most of the branded products are imported from china, and we know their quality, but it does not mean they are bad. They have good R&D to support them. Check with your friends and neighbors about the products they are using and chose from them. I know Sukam and Exide batteries which have gone dead.

If possible go with EL series of exide. I have heard good about them.

Will put another post for things to be done after buying an inverter.
The inverter itself needs good cooling and ventilation - either cooling fans or good heat sinks to dissipate the heat generated in the components and slots in the encasement for cross ventilation.

The points to be noted after buying the inverter would be great.

That is disappointing news regarding Videocon.

As for Xenon it is a subsidiary of the Amara Raja group who also make Amaron batteries. Infact Xenon is nothing but the Amaron Shield though in White casing. I am personally using the same and have no issues in year and a half of ownership.

Hi All,
I have recently bought the following Inverter + battery.

Sukam Smiley 1.4kVA inverter UPS (2 Yr Warranty) @ Rs. 8000
Exide EL6+ 130AH Fully Tubular battery (5 Yr Warranty) @ Rs. 13000 x 2
Total @ Rs. 34,000/= (Incl. Taxes)

I am ok with them except for the following:
1) The Batteries are quite big and both cannot be fitted into a single trolley / Cover.

2) When the inverter is powered on and is in idle mode (no discharge or charging happening), there is a faint high pitch noise (similar to that buggy monsoon nights). For me thats quite irritating despite having installed the set-up in a secluded place. I am ok with mild noise when charging or discharging but not when in idle mode.

I learnt from my vendor that this is common phenomenon for inverters above 1KVA. It seems there is an addional coil for cooling purpose. This coil is mated to an IC that yells out at high frequency.

Please let me know if any of you have experienced the same and if there is any work around for this.

Thanks.

Yes my Sukam 1400 va also makes a humming noise at idle.

As for the trolley get a double decker trolley it has two compartments for the two batteries and the inverter goes on top. These are available from Sukam for 1400 bucks.

Is the battery price @ 13000 each a typo.

The humming sound is because of the trickle charging. it is constant, even when the battery is not normally charging.

The exide EL series is one of the best in the market. Can you tell me the full model number.

Thanks for the answers.
Each Exide EL6 130+ costed 13K.
I was told the double decker stand cannot hold 2 EL+ batteries in tandem. Going for 2 stands will ruin the aesthetics. I have decided to cover them in a ventilated closet.

Can someone post how much a inverter would cost if you need to run a 1.0 ton or 1.5 ton Air conditioner ?
how many batteries it would need and how long they'll serve the purpose ?

1 ton ac will require about 5 kva inverter. 5 kva inverter can be made to work with 5, 6, or 10 batteries according to your choice. The price of the inverter increases with the number of batteries used since they have to put different transformers. I would prefer you go with 6 batteries. it will have more life. 10 battery is good too, but it will add about another 40000 to the budget. I am talking about 130 ah batteries. so 6 batteries = 10000 x 6 = 60000 plus 30 to 35k for the inverter. total close to 1lac.

If you want to cut the cost, then you can use less Ah batteries. six 80 Ah batteries will cost about 42k, but it means less backup.

These are just approximate values, depends on the brand.

I too am looking for gensets, given the power situation now, I don't expect it to get better in june July. How much capacity genset to be used to run 1.5 ton AC? And can I get the one used to run on LPG as kerosene sourcing is difficult and petrol/ diesel will be costly.
