Philips dvp5106k - Altec lansing 251 - Still no 5.1 channel Output

Team,

As the post suggets, I have the Dvd player and the home theater with me, I have been trying for a lot of time to achieve 5.1 channel output..

Currently there are three outputs from the home theater, I have three RCA to Mini cables thus 6 connections are being fed into the DVD player, This was the first thing I tried, No luck, Then the issue was with the Dvd's that I played, So I got myself an original 5.1 Dvd,

Tried switching the selector to 5.1, dialogue and rear speakers does not work at all, Someone was telling me to go for optical cables and should sort this issue...

Can anyone tell me how to sort this issue?
