@islandman, Mediacoder is a really nice open source (= free and good) software than converts nearly anything (video and audio) to anything. Small footprint, not memory hungry. You can get it at MediaCoder - more than a universal audio/video transcoder

Encoding settings for WM
Audio:
44100-48000Khz @ 128-96Kbps ABR(sample and bitrate based on source)
Algorithm Quality: 0 (best)
Channel: Auto

Video:
Xvid 1.2 (2-pass, unrestricted profile, Trellis Quantization, MPEG Quantizer)
320x240 @ 400-500kbps
4 threads(My encoding machine is a quad xeon, increases file size slightly)
No GMC or Quater Pixel as TCPMP does'nt support

Audio Filters:
Volume Normalization

Video Filters:
De-ringing
De-blocking
De-interlacing (FFMpeg)
3D Denoiser (High Quality)
-------------------------------------------------
I got the above settings from a FAQ somebody'd posted someplace a while back.

I myself don't bother to do all these settings. I use something I bought called Pocket DVD Studio. Rips DVDs to DixX or WMV. Just select waht format you want, how good you want the audio and video to be and hit convert. Easy as pie. I use TCPMP to watch the ripped video on my PPC.
