I am back on Windows XP. Got a bigger HD and installed XP.

Quick play and touch screen not working as of now, will search for drivers later.

As of now - all is fine. Will update in a day or 2.

Here is my Windows Experience Index score. Frankly speaking, I think they are the most useless thing in Windows Vista.

Anyway my system specs are:
AMD Athlon X2 3800+ Dual Core 2.0 GHz
Nvidia 8800GT 512MB
OCZ Gold 2GB RAM 800MHz DDR2
Hitachi 500GB SATA HDD and Samsung 80GB SATA HDD
Auzentech X-plosion Dolby Digital DTS 7.1 Sound Card
Hauppauge WinTV PVR USB2 External TV Tuner

One thing I'm really impressed with is the Media Center. With my TV Tuner, it's the best TV software I've seen so far.

Also I haven't had much of a problem with newer games, but I know my processor is a bottleneck on the video card. I'm waiting for the prices to drop on the AMD Phenom quad cores.

Also Windows Vista has these improvements over XP in terms of Video Card and Audio drivers which somehow makes the games and movies look and sound much better than XP on the same hardware (I have dual boot: Vista and XP).

So I'd highly recommend Windows Vista to people, provided they have the right hardware for what they want to do with their computer.

Also having a good video card is a MUST have to play any game smoothly on Vista, a good processor with mid range video card will not suffice.

Here's my vista performance rating. The hard drive is fragmented.

N_C, if I'm not mistaken you have the HP Pavilion TX series laptop, right?
There was a forum which had all the WinXP drivers for this series - organized in three RAR files (91MB, 91MB, 34MB).

I don't remember what forum it was but Google the following 3 names to get the rapidshare download links for the driver files:

I have the Toshiba Dynabook TX67C laptop. The vista in it keeps hanging often and goes to blue screen. I could not even read the screen content. It restarts itself so fast that I am unable to read it.
Do we have any good diagnostics for the vista machines? Appreciate any help on this. Thanks.

I just bought a HP DV6700 laptop with an AMD Dual Core Athlon, 2Gig RAM. Pretty basic laptop for my home use. Vista Premium seems to work fine. Initially had a problem with IE crashing every 2 minutes even for sites like google. But, i did some playing around with "manage addins" and that is working great now.

Media center is good. The DV6xxx series comes with remote control and media center works great with the remote. Playing DVD's etc is good. The only thing i would have wished is a way to add other internet media links to media center (which i am unable to do right now).

well sorry to barge in like this and boldly say Vista sp1 is one mean (pardon the expression)beast. I customised it with vlite and it works like a breeze.

I have Vista Home Premium in my laptop which came preinstalled.
Recently I have installed Vista SP1. Two things I have noticed after the installation of SP1:

1. File copying is faster. (No more “25000 days remaining” messages)
2. Context menu comes up instantly on right click. (On files and on desktop)

I was contemplating on getting an XP installation in a separate hard disk partition in my laptop. But I was so reluctant to make my machine dual boot, so I searched for a solution and found another possibility. Now I am running XP parallel without even installing it my laptops hard drive! I did this by installing Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 (Free – but similar to VM ware) on Vista. This allows you to run virtual operating systems in your PC. The entire hard drive of the virtual OS is just a file in the host operating system. The interesting part is, this virtual hard drive can be in a memory stick or external hard drive. Guess what, XP running as virtual OS is as fast as Vista! The boot up time is less than 30 seconds. Here is a screenshot of XP running as virtual OS in my machine:



If I remove the memory stick, nothing related to the virtual OS could be traced in the local computer – The entire OS resides in the memory stick.
Uses of a virtual OS in a home PC:

1. You can test drive software before you install it in your actual OS. ( I am evaluating some antivirus in XP now)

2. You can browse any risky web-sites, or run risky apps which you don’t trust in the virtual OS. Even if something happens, nothing happens to the host OS.

3. I installed Yahoo Messenger only in the virtual OS. I don’t want it to be running on my actual OS.

4. Keep confidential data much more secure by moving it to the virtual OS’s hard drive (Virtual hard drive file)

5. Do any kind of destructive testing on the OS; there is always a possibility to undo the last session completely.

Quite a handy feature. The best I have come across is DeepFreeze Standard. You cannot cripple/destroy your 'frozen' drives, neither can any virus or trojan!

Now that's what I call battery backup! :)

I have been using Vista since the first week of December 2006 (you know how!!), and have tried both the x64 and x86 versions. Almost everything i use worked without a problem, and those that did not work had an update / alternate version.

What was even better was Server 2008 - it was pretty fast, can be configured (for most parts) to look and feel like vista, but lacked the kind of built-in drivers that vista had. For anyone interested, here is a link: Convert your Windows Server 2008 to a Workstation! Home

Yup.... me running Win 2008 server as a server :) with all themes and visual effects..... works good for me....
3Ghz Core2Duo and 2gb RAM.

just shifted from Server 2003 to Server 2008.... I find 2008 much better.

Windows 2008 with desktop experience option installed is YUMMY! I have one of my workstations running it that way and i love the effects. :D

Just switched from Vista to XP Professional on my XPS, what a difference! The performance is super fast compared to Vista & I'm loving it already!

Plus, no irritating security alerts & stupid menus!
