I really do not update unless its a major one, Like XP with its SP2/SP3 was a rock solid, best thing that MS did. I use third party software for security issues.

Since this is a car Forum Don't practice this on cars. Cars do need regular servicing and checkup even if its isn't broke. :)

Third party software cannot fix security loopholes existing in windows code base.

well i did not find any need after two major Service Packs. and nor did so many of my clients.

actually What i feel is company do add features in those updates that let them have control over their products

Come on, that's not happening. MS sure knows what is the implication if undocumented feature is found in their software - hope you know the story behind all Easter eggs in Windows OS disappearing from XP onwards. Same case with Office products.

actually i am not generalizing it to MS.

I have had a very bad experience with HP. The smart A** from Redington came and upgraded my friends expensive 5000ps firmware. The printer stopped using the CISS that i have made for him. I had a very hard time reverse engineering and finding the old firmware.

SO updated are not necessarily good.

I want to burn a CD so I can play it in the car.

The Nero I'd installed long back throws up error so currently I've no CD burning software.

Any pointers of how/what I could use to burn the CD?

I am assuming you want to burn songs to a cd, did you try using windows media player to do that?

There are plenty of freewares available for burning disks.

StarBurn is one of them which I have installed and used. Not as good as Nero in terms of user friendliness, but does the job.

I read a no. of articles/posts which said a Windows program to burn CDs more often than not makes them run only on that comp. or one having Vista; so was quite skeptical about using WMP.

I recently formatted my 3 year old laptop, wiping out the OE Vista OS that came along with it. I wasn't willing to spend money on MS again, so got a pirated copy of Windows 7 Professional(64 bit). Now after a week, it shows the message "Windows cannot be activated".

The computer is much faster than the laggard Vista and I quite like Win 7, but does the message mean that MS is going to shutdown my OS remotely, sometime?

Well, MS has been very strict about piracy since Windows XP. If you have a non-legit version of Vista/7, chances are the OS will be disabled sooner or later.

There are these "hacks" available that help you use the OS for free but frankly, I don't trust them as someone could have a hacking software embedded in the OS files itself.

And if you are looking for a legit copy of windows software then check out the TechNet Standard subscription. It is an yearly subscription that you can choose not to extend.

It gives you 2 licenses for a number of Microsoft products, including Office(multiple versions), that can be used ad infinitum. Best part is that the license is not an OEM license - but an 'evaluation' license.

Win7 OEM license is tied to a machine and can not be transferred to another machine.

The definition of 'evaluation' for TechNet is a little vague- at least to me.
As I understand, it can not be used for production environment. That, IMHO, covers 99.9% of us and shouldn't be a problem.

Last I checked, cost of Win7 home premium is similar to TechNet Standard.

Peculiar problem with Windows Vista Home Premium, OEM on my 2008 Dell Inspiron 1520.

I'm unable to delete a file that I had downloaded.

It is a very old 1980's movie downloaded from Torrent.
When I press on Delete, or Shift+Delete, it just says Discovering, then Deleting, and Calculating Time and eventually doesn't delete the file, just stays on this screen.
I have checked the Running processes (for Torrent client, Media Players, etc), Restarted laptop, Switched off internet connection. Still unable to delete the file.

Help please:

Did you try this:
unchecked the option to show thumbnails (in the Folder Options dialog box in the Windows Explorer – Tools menu > Folder options) and restarted the machine.
Then try deleting the file.
