I know that most companies are releasing new USB cables to help charge via USB's but I guess with proper drivers (sometimes hacked) usually do the work.

my last 4 phones have had the capacity to charge from the laptop.

Siemens S65 and sxg75
Motorola E680i
nokia N91

I tried a so called USB charger - an unbranded chinese stuff for Nokia phones from SP Road Bangalore (for 100Rs. I guess) but it did not charge my 8310, 6610 and any phone other than 3310 and 3315 (all of them Nokia). Did not try on N72 as I did not want to take a chance with that.

I can charge my wife's Razr and my L7 slvr on USB, but only from a desktop. I think from a laptop it does not charge.

I have a Blackberry pearl and it does charge of the PC and a Laptop, however please note that the laptop itself should have been connected to the mains, for the need of a USB charge is a Powered USB source.

It may have to do with USB 1.1 or 2.0, may be worth checking out. Many models from a couple of yrs ago do not have 2.0 USB. I am sure speeds supported are different, can not recall if charging capability was there in 1.1

To charge the slvr one needs only the cable, software is only if you want to back up the phonebook, etc. I use the cable on my office PC where I have no Motorola software, it charges the Slvr just fine.

cooldude, I am 100% positive. It was a silver N91 with 4gig HDD and a cradle. I used it in Canada and it was a middle eastern version. Dont have the phone anymore but will try to give you more details if needed.
