Did you try to install the driver after the update rather than rolling back?

I'm not talking about the display drivers, You need to have monitor drivers too, in your case it is the driver provided by Viewsonic, since you are trying to set the resolution to 1440X900 it is not available on standard plug'n'play monitor. and you need to install this from installer disk you got with your monitor, just search in the box you will find it (All this is needed if you are not using DVI port)
Here are the instructions for installing monitor driver from CD

Installation of Monitor Drivers for
Windows® XP

If your monitor was not detected. Please follow the instructions below to install
your ViewSonic monitor drivers (Display Optimization files).

1. Click Start on the Windows taskbar, select Run, type devmgmt.msc,
and click OK. The Device Manager screen will display.

2. On the Device Manager screen, click + (preceding Monitors).

3. Right-click Default Monitor (or Plug and play Monitor) and select Update
Driver.
The Hardware Update Wizard menu will display.

4. On the Hardware Update Wizard menu, select “Install from a list or
specific location” and click Next.

5. Select “Don’t search. I will choose the driver to install” and click Next.
The Hardware Update menu will display.

6. On the Hardware Update menu, click Have Disk, type d:\vsfiles\xp
(where “d” is the CD-ROM drive), and click OK.

7. Select your monitor and click Next.
A warning message may display, that states “the monitor has not
passed Windows Logo testing.”
Please ignore this message and click Continue Anyway.
After the Wizard has successfully installed your monitor, click Finish.

Hope this will help you,
Biju

Had tried that as well, even that did not work. I think there was something seriously wrong when the security patches loaded. Even after installing monitor drivers from the viewsonic CD, it was not showing me 1440 X 900 resolution . The monitor I have does not have a DVI port. It only has RGB port.

Currently in Win 2K i have not installed viewsonic driver, still it shows the correct resolution.

Try this

get into the display properties, then settings, then advanced, then find the adaptor tab and click on the list all modes tab, from this you can find the 1440 x 900 resolution click apply and you should now be able to view it ok

or you can try this software.

I am facing rendering issues with many a websites which only supports traditional square screens.may be it is a webdeveloper's work(CSS etc).Ofcourse team-bhp is rendered fine on wide screen though.

google searches looks very empty with all results shrinked to LHS side in widescreen(atleast in GNU/Linux):
I am using stylish with a google search wide screen specific style added with my 19" widescreen monitor.Hope to share this as it may be useful for many others.
Steps:
1)install stylish add-on : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fir...108-latest.xpi
2)in below page ,click the " load into stylish " and save it.now use it.that's all.Grease monkey and other options may be available.but for a simple fix ,this is useful.

All info is here:
Google - widescreen (widen the searches display) | userstyles.org
--
Another style is display google search results in two panes :
Google Search Results Clear+Compact | userstyles.org

regards,
dc.
