Wireless net for Laptop

Currently using the Wireless AirCard from Reliance for net access on
my laptop. The speed is pathetic - are there any other wireless
connections which are faster & how much do they cost?

That is more a symptom of your areas/city.

Airtel itself has pathetic service in many areas. I have tata indicom in delhi and its junk for more than 2 websites, but standalone downloads it averages 8-10k/s. go figure

Choose one that works best in areas you work

get a hi-speed broadband connection and retain the Reliance data card too

when no wire is available the use the data card otherwise keep running on broadband

cos these wireless net access card are too slow

have used Tata Indicom and Reliance both.

Most of the wirelss connections do not have any good spead at all. I am using TATA Data card. The claim speed is 256 kb but I only get 8-10. I would suggest to go for Broadband instead of the wireless. Wireless is only good when you do not have any other option available.

I meant that if you open like 2-3 websites in parallel, complete with flash, heavy images (say ~500kb each), then both sites take looong to load.

The huawei application indicates only ~30-60 kbps (far cry from 230.4 kbps it claims) but on single download it can average like 10 KB/sec.

Which wire-less network card is best for use in Gujarat ? Usage will be in rural areas, Amreli-Rajkot-Jamnagar & surrounding areas, and Vadodara-Surat-Dangs & surrounding areas.

TIA

In Bangalore at least, the Tata Indicom PCMCIA card works well. Reliance was pathetic. Tried the Tata USB thingy as well, but I felt the PCMCIA was faster.

Reception is much more stable with an external antenna.

Kunal, you could be asking for a lot ... I can ask you for lots of stuff. (Just to give you an idea, I am in Rajkot now, and feel I can use help).

Hutch is apparantely offering data cards, but the 1GB plans that they have will be used up in no time. In this aspect, Reliance may be better with their unlimited plan @ 1500/- p.m. Hutch data card is about 5K, compared to Reliance at 2.9K. Download speeds are passable - it makes sure you remember that this is a dial-up connection.
